Has anything been accomplished ? Yes. These projects are mainly very basic research. This type of research lays the groundwork for more targeted research based on this groundwork. Have diseases been cured yet ? Not that I am aware of. But some promising drug candidates have been identified and are being tested. Have the projects run down a lot of deadends ? Yes, but knowing what does not work can also be helpful. This is the kind of work which takes a long time to bear fruit. Human biology is a lot more complicated than many people imagine. There are about 37 trillion cells in the human body which generate probably many more proteins and we harbor further trillions of bacteria. How all of this acts together to allow us to function as living, sentient beings is a monstrous problem. Hopefully the basic research helps to understand how all of this works. With greater understanding we will get closer to solutions. But this is neither a short nor simple process.
Cheers
