Question about WCG processing strategy

Assume you have two projects. Each project requires 1 year of full WCG processing power. If they are executed simultaneously, they will both complete after 2 years. If they are executed one after the other, then the first will complete after only 1 year.

It seems to be the intention to have many projects running simultaneously on the WCG and allow users to choose which ones they want to donate their spare CPU-time to. Seems reasonable. But... Will each of those projects produce results continously - or will the results of a project not be available until the final stage of the project (as is the case for the current HPF project)? If they dont produce results continously, then it seems a better strategy to run projects one after the other.

(I know things may not be as simple as that - other parameters may be of some significance, such as time needed to enhance algorithms, create bugfixes, do postprocessing of results and stuff like that - but still...)

Re: Question about WCG processing strategy

Troels,

You make a good point, however, right now, we're boarding projects as we get them accepted by the Advisory Board.

One of the reasons to offer a choice of projects is that some people will have a preference for the projec to which they wish to contribute. We are excited to offer this sort of personalization to the member of World Community Grid. Hopefully the additional projects will make World Community Grid more appealing, thus attracting new members, and decreasing the time it takes for all projects to be completed.

Re: Question about WCG processing strategy

Hello Troels Nørgaard,

You are right to worry about too many simultaneous projects slowing down the timely completion of projects, reducing our usefulness. But there is another counter-balancing worry. What happens if, shortly after starting a new project with a newly-written program, one of the scientists suddenly discovers a basic flaw in the methodology of the program? One requiring a partial rewrite that will take 6 weeks to code up and test? Nightmares like this are not unknown in scientific programs. With only one project running, all our options in this case are extremely distasteful.

By comparison, the disadvantages of multiple projects seem trivial. And nelsoc has pointed out a major advantage. Offering projects in multiple areas will draw far more members than any one project will interest. So it is win-win if we commit to several projects. If we try running too many projects at once, I expect that this will be announced by loud screams crying from the back office area.

Hi nelsoc,
Excuse me for being stupid but where in wcg setup do I get to choose which project I want to contribute to? I've been through every page of setup - Device Manager, Device Profile, My Profile, etc but no mention anywhere of project choice!

There will be a project preference button appear as soon as multiple projects become available sometime within the next few weeks.

EvoDude,

You will see the option to select which project you want to participate in on the device profile page. We had this displayed on the device profile page when we launched in November of last year. However, since their was only project it generated a number of questions. We decided to remove that until we had a second project.

When we roll out the new project, we will be updating the website to include content similar to the Human Proteome Folding project as well as updating the Device Profile page so that you can select which project to participate in.

thanks,
knreed

Re: Question about WCG processing strategy

Some of the projects coming down the road will not be as long running as the Human Proteome Folding project, so that should help balance things. Additionally, some projects will require more memory, disk space or CPU speed, and other projects will require less. Eventually, we hope to schedule work units based on machine capability. In addition the Linux versions of the project may not launch simultaneously with the Windows versions, so there may be some number of weeks skew there. All of this would leave schedule gaps, which should be filled better by running multiple projects.

In part, this will be a learning experience in balancing everything while running the grid as efficiently as possible.

Re: Question about WCG processing strategy

Well I never thought I would see the day when someone else would see the sense of "targeting" work units to system capability.........the pup is impressed.

Now give us some cancer work biggrin
