Re: Badges for more than 100 years

Especially if these ever become mainstream. 1000 core processor uses less than an AA battery

I see the article is from 2016.
Cheers

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

As noted yesterday, BOINC can handle only 200 job slots, so it will have to be a multi-client install (for which there are cc_config settings)

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

AMD has already announced the latest EPYC processor with 128 threads available Q2 this year. That would be 256 threads in a 2 socket server

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

+1 . I agree that teh actual rule for badges have many limits.
have limits for huge contributors with more than 100 years in many projects, and have limits for other contributors between 20 and 50 years, and also between 50 and 100 years.

I think that some changes in the rules could motivate more people donate more time for many projects. Badges are recognitions in WCG and many people believe that it make sense ! wink biggrin idea good luck peace cool

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

I would love to see more badges beyond 100 years... especially while there is little work available for some projects meaning you can only crunch on projects where you have already 100+ years.

50 or 100 year increments beyond 100?

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

Congratulations thunder7 rose

- I wonder what could be the problem creating
200 and
500 year badges confused
It's just switching a digit 1 for a digit 2 or 5
or?
- a 1000 badge may exceed the width, but there's a solution to a problem like that.
A 999 year one for instance idea

They have been rather silent on it. It seems simple enough, but every badge adds another layer of statistics to check for them, post a note, and add the badges to our displays. Maybe IBM just needs a few more servers. IBM could also solve the problem by having more users to help finish projects and cycle new ones in and out, making it more difficult to do more than 100 years of work before the project ends.

Your descendants running WCG can complain to NIST and get another SI metric prefix for more.
My guess is a two syllable word starting with "X-" like XFILE- since they may be using descending letters now. They can skip letters that are already assigned and keep going for awhile. I- and O- would be confusing, so skip those. Many other single letters are already used for other constants and variables, so this proposal claims that R and Q and maybe B are about the only ones left without dredging up new alphabets or symbols.

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

I came here to post the same recommendation, and luckily checked and see most of you made the same point I was going towards.

If I may refine it a little:

Can we just prioritize getting additional badges for Mapping Cancer Markers?
It's the majority of work we do, and badge hunters avoiding MCM after maxing out of badges creates a perverse incentive: intentionally turning off "send me work from other projects" and letting processors idle until rarer projects trickle in.

Creating more badges for the less common projects creates even more "fear of missing out" on badges and more anti-throughput behavior.

And creating several dozen more badges for the most common project (or projects if you elect to include MIP), requires less work and less overhead.

Please keep the distance between badges approachable.
Most other users suggest very significant gaps as the badges increase, but increments of fifty-years encourages people to keep plugging away (via gamification and consistent rewards).

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

& one more thing, MIP badges have NO FRAME.
All other badges have frames.

Why? Can admins & techs fix it?

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

+1 for badges above 100 years

+1 for adding a frame around MIP badges

Re: Badges for more than 100 years

Meanwhile, just award yourselves the higher badges and declare them on the recognition threads, but stick to the 1,2,5. etc. as per the actual badges.
