All devices have the name "android".

Sorry if this is or isn't a WCG specific issue. I have a few Android smartphones crunching for WCG (OpenZika, etc). All the device names say "android", so I don't know which smartphone is contributing. I went into Settings, About, Phone on Android (I think I have 4.1 or 4.4?) but I don't see a way to change the phone name.

Does anyone know how I might go changing the device name to something unique? If I need to involve a PC or MAC with a USB cable, I have access to both machine types.

Thanks.

Re: All devices have the name "android".

Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to change this. I have about a dozen, and all say android as well. If one drops off, it is a needle in the haystack game to try to find which is the needle.

in another thread, user @cristipurdel made a post regarding some ideas:
Finally managed to solve:
-remote notification when device is offline for more than 8 hours - high
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/automate-user/wZLr7GWFdd8
-check CPU temp and send an emai if CPU temp drops under a predefined value (I just check the device temp and substract 5-10 deg)
I had this issue since some devices decided to go haywire
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/automate-user/Cozif6uW0hQ

things still needed to figure out:
-restart device when last cpu freq is lower than a certain value, needs root - low
Can be covered by the CPU Temp check flow
-amlogic thermal throttling universal method - low
-auto restart after power-outage - low

So ideally this setup (with 3 automate flows) should allow for smooth operation of 50 devices, by rotating the wi-fi connection every 2 minutes (not to use a secondary router). If things go bad (wi-fi connection or CPU temp) I just email myself so I can debug it.
I can also bypass teamviewer host since it's not 100% reliable (sometimes it disconnects on its own)

Re: All devices have the name "android".

Since these are older versions of Android, you may be able to get nativeBOINC to work. It allows you to rename your device. Just keep in mind that it doesn't support version 5+ IIRC.

Re: All devices have the name "android".

I don't plan to upgrade the Android version. I don't even know this is possible. nativeBOINC is in the Play Store? I'll give that a go if its there. Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know how to root, so I don't about the suggestions in the 2nd post...

Re: All devices have the name "android".

Last time I looked it was in the Play Store.

If you don't find it, you can still pull it from their site - http://www.nativeboinc.org/site/uncat/downloads

Edit: Play store link - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sk.boinc.nativeboinc&hl=en_US

Re: All devices have the name "android".

can I use APK Editor to edit the name from android to something else? nativeBOINC had too many options for me to review.

The standard app should have around 20-30 options, if you can figure it out, maybe you can modify the apk to run from the start with your preferences :)

You could try it and please post back if you succeed . Basically you need to find smth like android-16chars (your android hostname seen on your lan) switched to android-8chars (your android hostname seen on your boincstats)

Re: All devices have the name "android".

It's an entry that is in the android -protected- internal memory area. You'll have to 'root' the device to get to it (be very careful, make backup, as it can result in a device reset, losing all user data)

Re: All devices have the name "android".

If someone managed to change the name so it can be more understandable in boincstats for example, please post a description or link here, preferably if it is working also for android 8+
