FightAIDS@Home, Phase 2 - Project Update, May 2018

Hi Everyone,

We just received a short update from the FightAIDS@Home - Phase 2 researchers about their plans for the next stage of the project, which you can read about here.

Thanks to all of you for your support!

Very happy to see the update, thanks much for everyone involved in that as it encourages us continue to contribute.

We are also planning to use World Community Grid’s computing power to analyze new compounds that are important to our work with the HIVE Center at the Scripps Research Institute. This work will begin after we run a sample of these new compounds on our own grid computing network.
Does this mean Phase 2 or does this mean something else?

We appreciate everyone who continues to donate their computing power to the search for better anti-HIV treatments. We also encourage everyone to opt in to Phase 2 of the project—the more quickly we can run through the current work units, the sooner we can move ahead to new compounds.

Does the team plan to make their project more friendly to the lower-powered crunchers? It has been said many times in the past that this project is not really for everyone. I got very frustrated trying to run this project on my computers.

Cheers coffee

NixChix,

Do you mean from a memory usage standpoint? There have been no changes to the memory footprint but there have been some changes that have reduced the runtime. I know there were some volunteers having issues with trickle messages and intermediate uploads. Currently the runtime per task has been decreased and because of that both trickle messages and intermediate uploads have been turned off. If you haven't run FAHB in a while and these were causing you issues you may want to try it again. I can't promise they won't be activated again in the future but for now they are disabled. For the memory footprint there are no planned changes.

Thanks,
armstrdj

I would love to focus on doing work for this project, but I'm having a tough time keeping my systems fed with work, have to have this project plus one more just to keep my systems actually working.

Re: FightAIDS@Home, Phase 2 - Project Update, May 2018

The most common complaint is about the one-day deadline. My two computers are not particularly low-powered but still sometimes have difficulty managing the queue to meet all the deadlines with the one-day deadline. For this reason I have decided to focus on supporting other projects.

If the deadline were 3 days I would reconsider.

Also, if there were an easy way for the user to allocate computational slots to a project like what was done with the clean energy project I would consider adding some slots for FAH2.

Can't you just set max_concurrent in app_config.xml?

<app_config>
<app>
<name>fahb</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
</app>
</app_config>

Re: FightAIDS@Home, Phase 2 - Project Update, May 2018

I searched my HD and don't have a file that goes by that name.

Can't the WCG admins create a web page that creates the appropriate config files or make it an installation option?

Modifying the config files is beside the point. Only a small fraction of casual users would consider that type of customization. Project admins should act in way that makes it easy for contributors to donate their time and minimize the probability that it will be wasted.
