Hello,
pardon my english please, I'm German. There is the problem that my CPU gets so hot that my Cooler always runs loud during BOINC doing work. That seems not healthy to me. That is too when I have it running without doing anything else. I use: Boinc Manager Version 7.2.47 (x86) wxWidgets Version: 2.8.10 My Computer CPU is: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @2,70GHz 2,90 GHz With 15,00 GB RAM Runs with Windows 10 So running BOINC should not be a challenge. The Task Manager tells me that BOINC asks for 60%-75% CPU and 395,4 MB Ram That seems more greedy to me than I'm willing to accept. I think about 10% My Projects are: Microbiome Immunity Project Smash Childhood Cancer OpenZika Help Stop TB FightAIDS@Home - Phase 2 Outsmart Ebola Together Mapping Cancer Markers At the moment I have four tasks for World Community Grid running. It is a possibility I should only run one task. But if I stop one task BOINC opens another so it is four again. Is there any experience with that? Maybe it is something wrong with the preferences. The processor usage is on while computer is in use On multiprocessor systems use at most 100 % Use at most 60% CPU Time So I would be grateful for advices to reduce the CPU Usage of BOINC. Thanks in advantage Horst |

Hi Kosaptes,
greetings from Germany to Germany :) From your CPU, I guess the machine is a laptop. Running these at full load with Boinc is not too good an idea in most cases. The "Use at most xx% CPU Time" option generally is no good option to limit CPU usage. This lets Boinc run a few seconds, then stops it a few, at 60% it will run on average 60% of the time, heat up, cool down a bit, heat up again... The better option (as you already mentioned) is limiting the number of tasks running. Use the "On multiprocessor systems use at most xx%" here. As your system has 4 threads, enter 25% for one task, 50% for two etc. A good idea might also be to limit the clock rate of your CPU (only a bit lower saves much power) and/or to undervolt the CPU. |

There's also an automatic tool, which will limit the temp. of your CPU to only given °C...I'm using that, after I fried several nVidia GPU's with crunching SETi@home...link to tool is here: https://efmer.com/
----------------------------------------Tool will also limit the temp. on my CPU (throttle it down) & then I'll know that the cooler is "clogged" & that it needs cleanup. So hopefully you can also check you computer thay way. Hopefully you can use those tools to be safe & not to fry the equipment you have. ![]() |
