Hello there,
for quite a long time, I've been wondering whether I should use Linux or Windows 10 for BOINC based projects, specifically for WCG. As far as I know, Windows operating systems are kind of slower than Linux OS, but I don't know whether that also applies to the speed of computation that's required by WCG projects. Kind regards, DeliciousShoesHD! |

Projects such as FightAIDS@home, OpenZika, OET1, SCC1, are about 50% faster under Linux 64-bit than under Windows 64-bit.

I've not done any testing on this myself but I would also guess that changing the Swappiness value to a low value to keep data in the RAM rather than being placed on the swap partition could help in certain scenarios since RAM is a lot faster than your HDD/SDD. I have my Swappiness set to 1. This would be another benefit to running on Linux if keeping data in RAM rather than the page file/swap file benefits the speed for this project.

Linux. My 1950x went from 90min to 55 min in a VINA based app like the ones mentioned by Falconet. I think it was OET.

Does it matter that linux have gui? I was planning to install Ubuntu on one computer for testing purpose and another just for crunching wcg. Im not familiar with remote softwares on linux, i mostly use teamviewer on windows machines.

Teamviewer also works on Linux. Cheers

I wonder if anyone has tried running the Ubuntu that comes with windows 10 and compared the performance of the VINA based apps to Window and Linux on its own.

I wonder if anyone has tried running the Ubuntu that comes with windows 10 and compared the performance of the VINA based apps to Window and Linux on its own. I was inspired by this thread to make a comprehensive tests of different OS and BOINC versions but still have not much free time... so I decided to combine this with my current work and make few WCG runs on a new PC I've been preparing for my client it's still in work but preliminary results show sometimes even double speed boost on a Linux Mint installation compared to Win10... (the hardware is Intel 8th Gen Pentium Gold) for more precise comparison I'll dig for my old AMD box and will run every project in different environment - that Linux speed can really turn an old hardware to a very competitive computing node, so I certainly have to try everything ) surely it will take some weeks to gather that info but even now I'm starting to test hardware with Linux Mint USB flash in live mode... using WCG for testing under windows was useless because of bigger task running time but now it's a totally different situation viva linux! let's go crunching! ) p.s. detailed results of my test I'll post in a separated thread when ready |

Yes, Linux is faster; I have compared most of the WCG projects. But MCM and MIP are pretty good on Windows, almost as fast as Linux, and I run them on a Win7 64-bit machine also. But the VINA projects and FAH2 are definitely better on Linux. So if you have to make a choice, that is it.
