I have noticed that the work units I am receiving have changed from having 10 to 20 structures within them to having only 1.
The significance of this is that checkpointing only occurs at the completion of a structure. Therefore these units run for over an hour without checkpointing. Please be aware of the above if you shutdown your computer regularly. |

I wonder, ca5065, would you think there also could occur a loss of processing time
if you for some reason chose to suspend a WU to be resumed later? |

If a work unit is suspended with 'leave application in memory' set, it can be resumed without loss of processing already done. However at any shutdown or restart memory is lost and a work unit would resume at the previous checkpoint.
In order to avoid loss of processing time, I intend to hibernate my PC overnight rather than shutdown. Hibernate writes all memory to the hard disk. At startup the memory is reloaded from disk and processing continues without any loss. I use Boinctasks so I can easily see the time since the previous checkpoint for each work unit. Be aware that next week includes the monthly Windows update which nearly always requires the PC to be restarted. |

Thank you, ca05065.
Usually I just let WCG mind itself except for when I feel the need to advance processing of Mapping Cancer Markers which are treated like lepers on my laptop, and I would like to avoid wasting time because of ignorance when doing so. I downloaded ’Boinctasks’. So I need to find out how to suspend a WU with leave application in memory set. I’m sorry, these things are not my peak competence. Could I ask you, please, if you have the time- I think you're good at instructions and explaning in a way I can understand to give me a hint as to what to KliK in order to activate a suspension thusly: 'leave application in memory'? I use Boinctasks so I can easily see the time since the previous checkpoint for each work unit. Where/how do I see that? And should I wait to suspend a given WU until it somehow shows that a checkpoint has just been passed (in a way that one entire section or whatever is completed)? One more silly question: Would my laptop actually process any WUs while hibernating? I leave mine on 24/7 only to have the sceen turn off after five minutes in the belief hibernation throttles processing down to zero. Windows updates are dangerous. One spoiled my ’Normal’ template in Word – one I had carefully crafted years ago and I forgot how I did it. The instructions as to when to have the restart after an update done or not and when it may take place are worser than double Dutch, so it’s hard to defend oneself. |

The good news is that MIP work units have returned to multiple structure work units so checkpointing has resumed.
Suspending work unit with leave application in memory set: Leave application in memory is a BOINC preference. In Boinctasks - Extra menu -> BOINC preference -> Disk tab and then tick the box. A task can be suspended by selecting it, right click to get context menu and click suspend Time since previous checkpoint column: In Boinctasks - Extra menu -> Boinctasks settings -> Tasks tab and select which columns to view. A PC does no processing when hibernated. |

Thank you very much for your very understandable instructions, ca05065.
They were so accurate that I was able to do all the steps, and I have saved your post for future reference. I hope your abilities to explain so well are applied on some kind of teaching in real life. |

I intend to hibernate my PC overnight rather than shutdown. Hibernate writes all memory to the hard disk. At startup the memory is reloaded from disk and processing continues without any loss. I would be wary about hibernation as they are notorious for causing BSODs. I have no idea how would effect a program like BOINC. That said, in recent years it has been improved on Windows 10.
