Captain keithhenry, once again I'm pulling up stakes.
I don't know where I have been - well, old f**tland - but I know where I went: To Maine. Thank you for your hospitality; I look forward to giving communication/discussion/talking here one more try at a future occasion I think this time around was a bit better than the time before that. We'll get there some day ![]() |

LM, I realize there's a Base Camp HQ but does it really makes sense to go all the way back to Kathmandu between treks? If you're going to summit Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga, Nanga Parbat, Lhotse and the like, we can keep things stocked here and save you a whole lot of travel time. The elevation here works in your favor too. A base camp that's closer can't hurt.

No, keithhenry, it doesn’t make sense what I do; you’re absolutely right. But as long as there are Base Campers out there who like to have fun this way – most of the teams we visit seem to care very little – it's fine. And if the time comes when I’m the only Base Camper in the whole wide WCG world, I shall probably continue migrating east, west, north and south.
It is very touching being offered shelter by you – and a few others, too. A permanent residence! It’s nice to know I can find a roof and perhaps a bowl of soup on a lousy day. ![]() The brother of an old friend of mine entered Nepal illegally in 1951 at age 23 and began a one-man expedition up the Mount Everest from the north side. He had no money, no experience, and his equipment was roughly limited to an ice ax. Still he managed to reach the 6,800 m/22,700 feet mark. The leader of the successful 1953 Hillary expedition regarded the feat of this crazy Dane bigger than their own. Why do I tell this? Probably because you mentioned all those mountains, keithhenry. Kilimanjaro should be a friendly and negotiable one, though. |

Oops, sorry. That's the peril of analogies. Trekking makes plenty of sense and, back in the day, was tempting for me. There's plenty I still want to do here at MOT though and that comes first for me. In a lot of ways, trekking is like a DC version of the Friendship Force my parents were very active in. It gave them a chance to make friends around the world long before the internet and in person too. They got to visit 28 different countries in their time, including Cuba as a part of former President Carter's trip there on 2002. For me, that's what teams are for here at WCG - a way for us to get to know each other no matter what part of the world we call home. So keep posting, keep trekking and keep dropping by to visit - often.
----------------------------------------BTW, it would seem crazy Danes are a lot like hillbillies - the north side huh? He must of not seen much point in trying to do it the "easy" way. |
