Wow! There's not been this much activity here in longer than I can remember! That’s how I see it, too. This is not a bad thing. I hope not, because you go on with a lecture which may not mean so, but which I interpret as: ’this is a business forum, and chit-chat should be taken elsewhere’.You do soften your stand further down in your post, as far as I understand it. You have a certain e e cummings way of saying things ![]() To me the ’community section’ – mainly ’Teams’ and ’Chat’ should be the sandbox where we could make chit-chat (as long as we don’t use English words that management find unfit for an American family forum, and as long as we don’t step onto such mine fields as discussing regulations for weapons possession internationally – just the two incidences I have had, which is not a lot compared to the quantity of talk). I come here because I find a collection of extremely bright people who have decided to do something actively with their computers for science. My fellow crunchers have an IT-knowledge that sweep my feet away. Besides, all of those I have ’met’ have a personality which is stimulating for humor and general knowledge and commands my deep respect whether I agree with them – or they with me – or not. And I do read business posts, to which I unfortunatly only rarely have comments. And if: Ridiculous ones. In short, I find chit-chat important. I realize it must be a nuisance for the orthodox business cruncher to slalom around all the ’little mermaid’ posts in the ’list of recent threads in all forums’, but he usually finds his way. However, it is my impression that a good deal of the visitors to the WCG Forums make a habit of reading my posts, judging from the ’Views’. Unfortunately, only few of them leave a post of their own. My intention with posting in your thread – and in Johnny Cool’s and some others’ – is to contribute to keeping them alive. This woman likes communication – well, to me it’s the salt of the Earth – even if it only consists of short four letters ![]() But, of course, I could go Facebook only ![]() Weeping ![]() Loudly ![]() Have you noticed that women are in short supply here, keithhenry? Crunchie was here ![]() Base Camp has its peak day at it's trek to Mexico today. You can earn a badge with a turtle if you donate 1 - one! - WU ![]() - the address is in my signature - and you return here by April 10 by the latest ![]() |

LM, I'm all for active discussion here. We do however have a bit of history of having "dust ups" in our thread. Frankly, I don't want to see anyone else grabbing the admins attention. This thread is the main way we have to get to know each other as a team and as a community. I'm all for that but see far too little of it. Most of us have been here a long time so it may be a bit like a long running conversation that has wound down. What goes on here in all the forums is merely a reflection of us as a society. Here in the US, we sadly seem to have become highly polarized and much of civility and respect has been cast aside. Frankly, that scares me. I keep hoping that most of us aren't that way but we're just not as vocal as those that have created that impression. Nowadays, it seems like it's all a competition between various conspiracy theories and accusations rule the day. Jack Nickelson's role as the US President in the Mars Attacks movie had him telling the Martians "why can't we all just get along" right before they stab him thru the heart from behind. That seems to stick with me more and more as time goes on. The real focus here is the crunching and all of us here that are part of the WCG community are really, really good at that. We've accomplished so much. We can build on that in other ways too and that's the opportunity the forums give us. I've seen forums at other projects go bad though - enough that one project just shut the whole project down. I can't see that happening here - I don't WANT to see anything remotely like that here. Even silent forums are better than that. Yes, I have been amazed at your level of posting here in the forums (even when you exclude the letter game threads) and that you've "lasted" this long. Keep it up LM! I want to keep believing that we can continue to focus on the crunching like we have and build on the community we have here in the forums. Let's all keep posting.

Judson, from what little I do know, you've had your hands full for a good bit. Getting "the dust settled and the mess cleaned up" always seems to take longer than it should. Good to hear from you and see you posting.

keithhenry, this is a very beautiful post which reveals a side of you which I didn't see before
----------------------------------------![]() I don’t want to whip up anything, least of all scratch old wounds so that they may bleed. If there has been a conflict, which you hint at, I’m not aware of between whom and why. I never followed this thread very closely and was away for a long period of time. I just happened to read two posts from xroule that I found interesting. So, if I stepped on some sore toes, I apologize. It seems to me that the return of NiceTexMed and judson Somerville MD may infuse an agreeable mood and some activity here, and I shall try my best to support that when I visit. @NiceTexMed: Yes, four-letter-words are a specialty of mine that I always try to perfect further ![]() EDIT: Improvement of a link [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 8, 2018 10:53:27 PM] |

Gerald, I don't know how they are doing it but I'm all for anything that helps and supports our veterans! Walking the paths of Arlington is a must for any visit to Washington. The enormity of the commitment and sacrifice of our veterans is hard to fully comprehend if you're not a veteran yourself but walking those paths and hearing Taps at the Tomb of the Unknown leaves no one unaffected.

LM, thirteen and a half years is a long time and things have happened here and there. I am a horrible dancer so I know well about stepping on toes. You haven't so there's nothing to apologize for. I've always been a good talker. As I have gotten older, I've tried to actually say something when I do. I still have plenty of room for improvement. I enjoy your visits but our campground still misses you!

Yes, you are an awfully good talker, keithhenry, and what you say is meaningful and makes sense.
More down to earth than e e cummings now ![]() I should be pleased to dare my toes dancing with you, if you’re equally courageous ![]() Consequently, there has been a change of my plans. On April 10 when our Base Camp trek to Mexico ends I had my eyes on a French sofa. Instead I’ll pitch my tent at the campground in Senile-old-farts-of the-world-....uh.....uh.....-nevermind-land until Base Camp heads up to Maine on April 20. Would there perhaps be a state name there, too, for my GPS - even as I feel I live in that land too ![]() ![]() You mention one to-do thing when visiting Washington, D. C. I skipped it. I skipped it because I was there in 1984, so I visited the National World War II Memorial among many other things instead. Having visited The Normandy American Cemetery many years ago, ![]() I went to The Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten last year just when the most beautiful Japanese cherry trees money can buy were in bloom. When I saw what I took for a married couple about my age visiting with flowers, I at first thought they might be visiting Americans. But when some more came, I was puzzled. Upon returning home, I read that there is a program in the Netherlands where local Dutch people can adopt a grave. This is touching. And I saw with my own eyes that they were serious about the adoptions. |
