This morning Prince Henrik's closest family members held a service at his castrum doloris at Christiansborg Castle Church.
This video – unfortunately of poor quality - shows the arrival of Queen Margrethe II, her elder son Crown Prince Frederik, and his wife Australian Crown Princess Mary at the church. 1. Prince Henrik's coffin is placed on a catafalque covered with a cloth of purple velvet. 2. The coffin is covered by the Prince's own flag with the Prince's coat of arms. 3. Wreaths ar placed surrounding the coffin. 4. The candleholders around the coffin are so-called gueridones, which usually are displayed at Rosenborg Castle. They were also used in connection Queen Margrethe II's parents’ King Frederiks IX and Queen Ingrid's funerals in 1972 and 2000 respectively. 5. Mourners are allowed to circle the coffin. 6. An honor guard stand at the coffin. They are officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Home Guard. Since the 17th century, the Danish monarchy has practised the castrum doloris habit in Christiansborg Castle Church. |

We adress our condolences to Danish people for the mourning of
----------------------------------------Henri de Laborde de Montpezat, Prince Henrik of DanemarK born in France and amateur of good wine as the local newspaper of France southwest herald his death: Henrik de Danemark : la mort du "prince vigneron" du Lot à 83 ans He was a winemaker in his domain of Castle of Caïx -Luzech,Lot His vintage of 2011 -"Sa Majesté" -was labelled of one of the best that year.In fact he was a pioneer of Malbec white wine in that part of Lot department near Cahors. I read somehere that he remained deeply disappointed not to be king (as he married the queen) to the point that he asked not to buried next to her. Is that true? Will he be buried in France,as some hope overthere? |

Thank you for the link, alged.
Yes, Prince Henrik was very fond of his wine estate, and he and his wife spent time there every summer and enjoyed their relative privacy there. He was an author, a poet, a hunter, and a pilot, too, and he spoke six languages just to mention a few of his qualifications. The best one is that he made Queen Margrethe II very, very happy, and I think he was, too, most of the time. It's never easy to be transplanted to another country - especially in a role as the one he was bestowed. Prince Henrik behaved a bit strange for the most recent year, and just a few months ago it was announced that he suffered from Alzheimers, and then his errant statements became a little easier to understand for people. Yes, one of his complaints during that time was that he didn't get the status or recognition he wanted and think he deserved. Also, he declared he did not want to be buried (put in a sarcophagus) next to his wife as tradition bids at Roskilde Cathedral south of Copenhagen. The Queen designed the sarcophaguses herself several years ago. So there is a change of tradition. There will be a funeral on Tuesday at 11 am with participation of the closest family and family friends. No big official ceremony as would be the normal thing. Prince Henrik will be cremated, which has not happened before. Half of his ashes will be spread at sea, the other half buried at Fredensborg Castle where he died, and which he regarded as his Danish Caïx. The French ambassador to Denmark has put some very fine words to Prince Henrik: 'He was the most Danish of the French and the most French of the Danish'. |

This morning at 11:00 UTC+1 the funeral ceremony for Prince Henrik will take place with the participation of just 60 guests, primarily Prince Henrik's Danish and French families.
The streets in the inner city of Copenhagen have been closed to traffic and in a custom I myself never heard about before the windmills across Denmark will have their wings stood in a 'mourning position' so that they form a cross. This picture shows Dybbøl Mølle in Southern Jutland, an important national landmark. |

The funeral of Prince Henrik was at 11:00 am UTC+ and at 10:30 all the church bells in the entire Kingdom of Denmark began chiming – inclusive of at my own neighborhood church. I think the best I can do is to link to a DR (Denmark’s Radio) web page where you will find still photos and at the top a video of the ceremony in a compressed form.
The dirt that was shoveled onto the coffin was a mixture of dirt from Chateau de Caïx in France and one of the royal residences in Denmark, Marselisborg |

You're welcome, alged.
I wish you a nice and safe trip come May, and perhaps you would like to check in here with a picture or two and if you do come near Chateau de Caïx and tell us if the wine is enjoyable |

In his wedding speech to – at that time Crown Princess Margrethe – 51 years ago, Prince Henrik charmed all of his new countrymen by saying: ’I came from the land of flowers to a flowering garden: Lilac and laburnum, flowering elder and peony, flowers in parks, in fields, and forests, wildflowers along the roads. But nothing compared to the girl. She was the verymuchprettiest ornament of the garden’ It is a paraphrase of the spirit in this Danish song – a tribute to Denmark - and said in Prince Henrik’s French accent, it melted our hearts instantly. Henrik sent his wife a message from beyond the grave. At the floor at Christiansborg Castle Church all the flowers were arranged to look like a garden as a surprise declaration of love from him to her. |
