You require 'Program News' checked for 'In-App Notifications'. I changed it recently and got the announcement. I don't get it - I did not have this item checked, as I was 100% sure that having item called "System Updates" with description "Research work availability, planned maintenance outages and other system updates" checked is enough to be aware about any planned maintenance outages. Well, some cores are now idling, hopefully not for long, according to the previous post. The problem is 2 part: 1) I've got digest set to Monthly, which seems equal to never. 2) The description is unambiguous below the selection area... ALL operate according the digest selection - For Email options- , EXCEPT Special Announcements which are sent immediately. WCG keep writing 'you don't have to do anything', but they're not very helpful at facilitating those who do want to do something... allow (hyper)active volunteers to set/adjust buffer for the affected period. In the particular case, either there was no SA tag on this event or this is bugged. For sure, retrying the 'View Sample' with my options, shows the maintenance as included in My News, but not in In-App with Special Announcements and In-App selected. Getting zilch In-App. Think "System Updates" is best also included in the Immediate. How many 'System Updates will there ever be to go beyond being annoying  (Suppose a new thread is needed to draw attention) |

If I might take this opportunity to make a comment, please:
The notices tab in BOINC Manager made me aware of the outage, but it didn't mention the duration (which annoyed me). I didn't have the sense to follow the "more..." link (not expecting a browser tab to open) and I (wrongly) assumed that notification would appear in the forum nearer to the actual event. Sure, put me down as stupid. But I'd be surprised if I was the only one to find this. I'm pretty sure that the previous announcement DID mention duration, too. I do think it would help if there were an announcement thread in the forum which was updated with progress and completion, especially as the forum is usually the only part of the system which continues to operate in an outage. Just my two penny'th. I think you guys do a great job; just looking to make it even better. |

Just would like to know which of the items below needs ticking to get this maintenance news to show up in 'Notices' of the client Special Announcements Program News New research project announcements, World Community Grid milestones, and behind the scenes look at the program. Research Project News The latest updates about our research projects, including paper publications and key findings. All Projects My Projects Member News Get notified of your contribution milestones, such as earned badges, and contribution issues. System Updates Research work availability, planned maintenance outages and other system updates. Digest Options* : Monthly * Email frequency applies to all news categories, except Special Announcements which are sent out immediately. Prefer to receive email at a different address? Update My Profile NB: Special Announcements I have ticked both under My News and In-App. When hitting the In-App Sample link, I get various project news, when hitting the My News, I do get the Maintenance news of Oct. 23 at top i.e. suggesting the maintenance news does not go to Notices (and did not get it). Not that it bothers me, the 4 core test box idling since about 14:00 UTC with a zero buffer setting... the test was just ended prematurely by WCG.  To follow up on this discussion in October, something did change as just now did get notice in the client about a December 9 down period... Preparing to beef up the buffer for the Saturday event :o) |
