Hopefully that thing will make a right turn and head out to sea. This has not been a good year so far. What else is in store? The earthquake in Mexico so far. Irma's path keeps moving west. A lot of northern Alabama will get it too now. We are almost out of the cone now it's moved so far west over the last couple of days. Looking like the worst will hit here late Monday afternoon and evening with Irma passing by just after midnight. It looks like what is left will stall out in western Tennessee. Nanoprobe should be starting to get the outer bands now if not already down in central Florida. |

I am almost ready to relax! It's almost enough to make you go out and buy some lottery tickets. Hoping to not jinx myself, we still have power - no outages, no flickers, nothing....yet. Come mid-day tomorrow, if the same is true, then I will count myself extremely fortunate. If we could catch a break with Irma, it seems we did. So many others did not. Irma did not make landfall in Florida as a cat5 as expected. It stayed more on land after landfall in Florida and sucked in dry air after landfall that helped weaken it even more. We got an unusually early "wedge" of cool air from the northeast along the mountains that pretty much eliminated the risk of tornadoes away from the coast despite being on the east side of the storm. Still, there's plenty of damage. Along with most of Florida, the coast fared poorly. Charleston, SC has major flooding in town from the surge. There's flooding in coastal Georgia and some areas of south Georgia but, comparatively speaking, not as bad. In the Atlanta area, the main problem has been trees falling taking out power lines and the occasional human in the home or car the tree falls on. According to the news, the main electric utility in Georgia has about half of all its customers with no power. The bulk of that is along the coast and in south Georgia. That's better than Florida where it's more like two-thirds. While this was the first tropical storm warning ever for Atlanta, I would not be surprised that folks will underestimate things the next time around (and there will be a next time). Still, after "snowmagedden" several years back, folks here are, for the moment, more inclined to worst case scenarios. Irma's caused plenty of damage but let's not forget Harvey and the folks still facing a very long recovery there. Jose is supposed to circle around out in the Atlantic and then head towards the Georgia/Carolina coast but early indications from beyond the normal track window has it getting pulled up to the northeast off the coast. It's still only mid-season for hurricanes too.

Well, I ended up speaking too soon. We ended up losing power about 11PM last night. There are 30K customers without power just with my little EMC. Progress is being made on clearing the trees out of the streets but there are closures still. I think all of this hit last night. The wind really picked up right about when we lost power and was strong for several hours. I think this was when the remainder of Irma made it's closest approach to Atlanta as it was moving into Alabama. I have the generator running though so we'll manage. I have to sort out grabbing the numbers with my iPhone and the emailing them to myself. Posting will have to wait though as my windows machines are down until i am off the generator.

Wow! It's Back to the Future time. I have power. Clocks are all reset (nothing is blinking), machines are all up and running. I must admit I am pleasantly surprised.
