I'm just waiting out April and see if this project actually does finish up this fast. Would I be surprised if around 4/30 the end date goes away and the percentage drops from 90%+ complete to a fraction of that? Nope. Been here long enough to know how these projects bounce around like yo-yos on their completion numbers. After they drop those numbers, I'll add this workload to my crunching mix again to work towards my Gold Badge.
Happen to be an x-IBMer myself. Just celebrated my 7th anniversary of getting bounced out of IBM when my job was shipped to India after working for them for a bit over 15 years. Such is life in corporate america. I don't hold that against scientific activities to benefit the world though. I crunched while I was an IBMer at work, and I continue to crunch for 7 years now afterwards. I keep my eye on the real ball and that is to do something with my extra CPU cycles to make the world a better place while I'm still walking around it. As far as I'm concern, this is one of the few things IBM does nowadays that I approve and support .... ![]() |

rbotterb, it sounds as though we were were both 'bounced' out of IBM in the same year - as I was made redundant by them on the 5th of July 2010 (just 10 days shy of completing my 19th year working for them). I don't know about you, but due to the lack of training I got whilst at IBM (it certainly wasn't for the lack of trying - but, whatever excuse they could give for denying me the opportunity, they used), it took me another 4 1/2 years before I could find myself another full time position. So, I've certainly no loyalty towards IBM, I'm purely here for the science.

I was working for IBM Federal Systems Division for 20 years and in 1998 IBM sold us to Loral/Lockheed Martin. All my benefits were transferred including 5 weeks vacation after 25 years. I had more vacation than standard LM employees with same years of service. During the 70's to mid 90's were the end of the IBM glory years. ![]() ![]() |

This may be a bit off topic, but In the early 70's I worked for a large regional banking concern. We had data processing equipment from IBM and another large vendor (who shall remain nameless). Two things I remember: 1) The IBM equipment was extraordinarily dependable, much more so than a competitors and 2) When there was a breakdown or routine maintenance was required, the IBM man would come in in a suit and a tie with a briefcase for his tools. He looked like one of the bank executives and he was always professional. The competitors service reps looked like they slept in their clothes, carried their tools in a haphazard fashion, frequently forgetting some and having to make another trip, and although sometimes polite, were more inclined to be on the surly side grumbling about being on a service call. I don't know what the price difference was for service, but IBM epitomized the meaning of good customer service.
----------------------------------------Now, back to the science. Cheers

What you said about IBM commercial equipment and service was my experience as an internal IBM user. I also feel in IBM providing systems for DoD and Nasa the corporate culture was very customer focused vs a short range bean counting mentality.

Cheers I seem to recall in the 80's IBM's service contracts were 8-12% of purchase price per year. A little more than other Minicomputer manufacturers in the day ( I did not deal with mainframes) . However, as you said they were very reliable. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by dcs1955 at Apr 3, 2017 4:15:59 AM] |

Where are the World Community Grid offices physically located? Are you sure there is an Office? At the time I left IBM most of the department I was in worked from Home... and we were spread over 4 states in Australia - there were many more departments like ours...
