Re: FAH very small work units. Is this normal?

BTW is Hyper Threading something unique to the I7, can it be done on lesser CPU's?
I just did a quick search on a big retail site for Intel chips with hyperthreading and the first results were all i7s but a number of i5s and i3 came up as well. My work machine is i5 and only 2 years old but no hyper threading, so it isn't a guaranteed with i5s or i3s, you'd have to confirm it if that is important to you.

I will mention hyper threading is an Intel thing, AMD is more straightforward with the number of cores = number of threads.

Thanks. I did some research and downloaded an Intel Utility that checks out your processors. Turns out my laptop's I5 has 2 cores and that hyper threading engaged hence my 4 WCG tasks running is due to hyper-threading (I thought I had 4 cores! :( )

Re: FAH very small work units. Is this normal?

BTW, you mention about reaching Sapphire in a number of your projects - unfortunately, Green = Emerald (1 year), there is a level higher than that - Sapphire - 2 years before it jumps up to Diamond at 5 years. So, once you've achieved your respective Emerald/Sapphire (1 yr/2 yrs) level for FAH1, there's still some place you can strive for, before Diamond becons.

Yeah I know about sapphire, I am now at emerald for MCM, Zika, Ebola, FAH2. Other than FAH2 (which has ground to a halt), I just need another 100 -150 CPU days to get sapphire for each. You do have an impressive set of badges. I have just been here 7months and tried to maximize contributions to projects I care about.

depending on how much you want to spend in hardware (upfront) and energy bill (later). i picked up a refurbished poweredge C6105 off newegg. = 48 corese at 3.0 ghz. i also use it as media/file server and mythtv dvr + more so its not strictly a cruncher. been rock solid the last 2 years and hoping for many many more.

Thanks I will look into it. I have been lusting after the power of Mid size company IT administrators (vs Corporate who form teams), who use spare/off hours time. I have been using two laptops with cracked screens and a reconditioned desktop I got for $200. The name of a power product that does not have the "Pixey Dust of" bit coin miners.

Big or small it all counts in the end. When I started I had my school laptop and gaming desktop. I have slowly acquired bigger and more powerful systems.

Scott I looked up the particulars of your Poweredge system. How many "towers" (or whatever they call server racks) do you have to handle all those cards. It would seem that power supply capacity would be a driving factor.

That server is a 2u rack mount chassis. It houses 4 nodes/blades. Power is 1100 watts if my memory serves me right. It is a very loud server. So not something you would want sitting on your desk.

Amazing. Other than your great result stats, I am now getting similar numbers. It looks like they have dialed in the numbers, and are ramping up work.
