Help settings BOINC

Hi! Since some time my Intel i5 8Gb RAM PC was overheating. Usual applications like Microsoft Word and Outlook (and the browser as well) froze frequently. On checking the Task Manager, I found out the reason is BOINC. The CPU utilization oscillated quickly from around 20% to 100% and back to 20% and so on. The task manager graph was a series of high peaks with deep valleys. On exiting BOINC, the CPU stays at around 20% and the noise from the CPU cooler decreases to non audible levels.
--
I need some help configuring BOINC in order it will work without highjacking the CPU power when I need to use other applications. Any advice is welcome! :-)

EDIT: I use BOINC 7.2.47 with Windows 10 64 bit Anniversary Edition.

Re: Help settings BOINC

The oscillation from low to high CPU usage is normal while BOINC is crunching. In BOINC, go to Tools > Computing Preferences to adjust processor usage. I typically set mine to allow computing while the computer is in use, but then set “While processor usage is less than X percent” to make BOINC stop crunching when I need the CPU for other tasks.

On my current i7 system, I have the following settings:
*While processor usage is less than 50 percent.
*Use at most 60% CPU time. (This system runs hot, and since it is a work computer I have not added extra cooling measures.)

As a side note, if your i5 is overheating, you may want to make sure dust is cleaned out. If it is a desktop, perhaps even reseat the CPU's heat sink with quality thermal paste. If it is a laptop, sit it on a laptop cooling pad.

I hope that helps!

Re: Help settings BOINC

It sounds like a laptop. If so try downloading and running TThrottle. Then play around to find a temp that works for you.

I run it on my Laptop and a few of my desktops.

Re: Help settings BOINC

@AMuthig, many thanks, unclicking While the Computer is in Use did the trick. I set it to start BOINC computing after 3 minutes idle. This reduced pc fan noise to almost nothing. Thanks!

Re: Help settings BOINC

Hi Pecos, on checking the TThrottle I found out BOINC task. This is a very useful software, as I am planning to install BOINC on more 10 pcs in several countries. On first sight, BOINCTask will enable me to temotely control the settings of each BOINC software installed in each pc.

Re: Help settings BOINC

Glad your problem seems to be fixed. I also run BoincTasks (tho on a LAN).

1. not sure if that's CPU problem...looks more like a RAM program, so I'd run a MEMtest if I were you!
2. you can always use Tthrottle for keep down the CPU temps...just make sure you run 100% of CPU time on Tthrottle, so it can manage the CPU allocation!
