Re: How to Get More People Involved

Is there a way I can have WGC share my contributions on Facebook? Stuff like earned badges, run time and points milestones, and contributions to new projects. I want something automated like some people have for that jogging app that says whats their face just ran 12 miles.

we used to have that...but the app was pro claimed to be spamming Facebook servers...so we're not so welcomed there!
sad

That's why we use Tweets.

Re: How to Get More People Involved

One more thing, could get some more people interested to stay on WCG...if you could contact all the people who joined in & they could contact you!

why?
we all know setting up BOINC for WCG might be challenging for some people who are not literate on installing & using programs...so this way we (older users, who invited them) could help them out in communications with them!
yes, it will take us time...but that time is what we need to have to have a good & validated new volunteer to get our badges!

how?
my suggestion is in Recruited volunteers section, you have a table of users who signed in to WCG with their nicknames, status (active, pending, inactive)...there could be another icon like mail, with which any older member could send a mail to a recruited member...so that you can contact him/her over mail!
also, any new member who got signed in by someone, should contact older member (mentor) with some icon over mail...as I'm not refereed to anyone to come to WCG - can't really say where to put icon for a mail to mentor...
on us, who are not refereed by someone...you could put an icon for forum, instead of mail...

hope it help us to keep more members on WCG!
further suggestions are welcomed...
;)

Re: How to Get More People Involved

I would think the best way to have more participation would be to have easier to achieve goals and badges. HST1 is a disaster for this. Fight Aids and Clean Energy are also difficult. Best would be to have WU's that could be processed in less than an hour by modest devices. A more extensive series of badges leading up to Sapphire would also kelp. The objective is to appeal to participants who own and pay for their devices and not necessarily to corporate networks?

Re: How to Get More People Involved

How about going directly to charities similar to the research...

NOT to ask them to give computing power themselves, but to provide links to WCG on their website; potentially directing it at people who want to contribute but can't afford to donate/don't have the time to volunteer.

A quick search for 'World Community Grid' on Cancer Research UK yielded only 1 result (excluding in the forum) which was from November 2007!

Even if these charities only listed WCG whilst there's a related project active there's the chance that those members may continue - and would also attempt to branch out from purely IT based members.

Re: How to Get More People Involved

This is a completely separate suggestion so I'm making it in another post:

It was mentioned by another member that the setup process needs work, in particular to reduce the steps required.

Easiest way I can think of is it to automate the usage of the PROJINIT_AUTH=weakaccountkey argument (if that's still the correct syntax), that way they don't even have to login as it's already done for them.

Easiest way would be to use the HTML5 download attribute in the download link;

<a href="..." download="normal filename_weakaccountkey.exe">Download Now</a>

What that will do is name the file the value of the download attribute (which now includes the key). Then in the exe you simply check if the filename contains a weakaccountkey. If it does, then run it as if it was called with the PROJINIT_AUTH argument.

This should be easily done and will not create any additional bandwidth/resource usage for WCG as it's the client's browser renaming the file.

That would be a good idea, however I think the problem was that there is a legal issue. I think Apple did not want to include BOINC because of the fact that it downloads workunits through that app.

I am sure someone with more knowledge can correct me, however I think this would be a very long road for apple to allow boinc to work on their phones.
