Optimizing my just built server

(Copied format from the fellow cruncher at post: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,39390)
(I am sorry for the large image laughing )
Hey y'all,
I just built my server in the last two weeks. Soon I will be away from my home for 4 months, without internet (no joke). I've bought all of the parts (ofc, I built it). I have some questions to ask and some experience to share.

This server is sitting in a corner of living room.

Specs:
CPU: Xeon E5 2670 v1 x2
Motherboard: Supermicro X9DRL-3F (ATX :)
Cooler: Hyper 212EVO
RAM: 8x 8GB RDIMM DDR3
SSD: 850 EVO
PSU: HX850i
Case: H440
OS: Windows 10 Pro, tried Linux (see below)

My questions:
1. Is there any significant performance difference between running 24 thread vs 32?
2. I tried Linux (ubuntu 16.04.1, 4.4mainline; clearlinux 9610, 4.7) , and took few days to let the server run 24 hours, found out the average run time for MCM and UGM are about 120% of similar batch ran under windows 10. I suppose Linux has lighter kernel and better NUMA support, but why the efficiency is lower? What did I miss?
3. Will my server stable enough to stand 4 months of unsupervised full load? Temperature: 60/65 max on CPU 0/1, 68 max on PCH, 50 max on RAM, 32 max on SSD, ??? Max on PSU(will setup soon).
4. I have a BE550G UPS, any advice on how to setup UPS?

Experience:
Currently those E5 v1 probably is the best choice to go for perf/$. 212 EVO is definitely best bang for buck, but watch out for RAM/Mobo clearance. IPMI feature is amazing. Windows 10 is the best way to go if you don't have very deep Linux knowledge like me. 64GB RAM is way too overkill for WCG but I planned to run ATLAS@Home or other VM later on.
Oh btw, the MS Remote Desktop app on iPad Pro is just, pure, awwww

Re: Optimizing my just built server

FWIW the Vina tasks run 35-40% faster on Linux. Have you thought about trying dual boot or is that even possible with 10? Good luck with your new build.

Re: Optimizing my just built server

Haven't tried dual boot. My secondary purpose for this server would be transcoding and VM hosting. Any recommendations for Linux for those things? I'm only familiar with Ubuntu so far, and I couldn't find any "click to run" apps like in windows, or without any performance penalty (which I was originally looking for). For example, I can't find any good front end for KVM, Vbox loses performance compare to Hyper-V. I have to compile from source for transcoding softwares.

my apologies, not native English speaker.

Oh btw, will hyper-v + Linux be a middle ground solution?

Have no idea. You'll need someone above my pay grade to answer that one.

I use hyper-v with linux and it works great. They crunch faster than windows and they are super easy to manage.

Re: Optimizing my just built server

I tried it yesterday. Problem is that since my system is dual socket I have to run two 16 threads instead of one to avoid NUMA compatibility. The other thing is... it renders the system very unresponsive, making it unusable for even just remote desktop. Any suggestion on how to fix this?

Re: Optimizing my just built server

Docker or LXD depending on which OS is the guest maybe ??

You could install either docker or LXD on mint then containerise Windows I guess.... I have yet to try myself

Running similar hardware here on Linux Mint and based on ppd alone saw very little difference on MCM and about 40% increase on OET (vina project)

You should be able to specify the maximum number of virtual processors that belong to the same virtual machine and that can be used concurrently on a virtual NUMA node by the way
