The most technically murderous NASA mission ever engaged in [the electronics sit in a 200KG titanium 'vault'], one article it was claimed the vehicle would circle the planet just 5km over it's cloud bed, but no that was nonsense, it will be about 4100km above, one orbit each taking about 14 days, 37 orbits planned in the next 1.5 years with sun-like radiation conditions.

Thanks for these links Seke, the whole mission would have passed me by. Usually rely on the Beeb for science stories. Heck they cannot cover everything.

The BBC science pod cast had an excellent discussion of the mission. Based on last years coverage of the Pluto mission I am sure they are going to hold up their end.

For those who don't want to miss anything regarding NASA, subscribe to the "NASA Breakings News" RSS feed. Here's a link to the countdown page [20 hours to go, so for me early morning on the 5th [about 5:15, for parts of the USA, the afternoon / evening of the 4th]. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/juno/main/index.html which also shows an animation of the mapping orbits, which are highly elliptical. Keep in mind that the vehicle is being slowed in a 35 minute engine burn from 260,000km/hr to 210,000 at which point Jupiter closeness will facilitate sling-shotting JUNO to then go off and come back on Jupiter's gravitational pool... when pulled off [the Jupiter Orbital Insertion - Timeline , which is the only time it will go behind the planet], it will further circle to always be in earths direct view with a transmission power in a heavily radiated environment just about to be received by arrayed antennas on Earth [500 Watts solar powered energy is all it's got... collect data, fly away, transmit, fall back, collect data, fly away, transmit and so on is sort of the picture]

Here's another excellent webpage from the same place as the Timeline one, decribing various on the orbits [the first few will actually take about 53.5 days], shapes thereof, additional rocket burn to narrow the orbit and finally JunoCAM. http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawal...-expect-from-junocam.html for which there is an app.

And we have JUNO orbit at 23:53 EDT... just about July 4th.
