Community, Competition and Citizen Science: Voluntary Distributed Computing in a Globalized World

Saw the mention of the book in the Berkeley forum News forum, currently in free pdf download over at https://www.academia.edu/22616939/Community_C...ing_in_a_Globalized_World

A good read, with at least one mention of WCG as umbrella project to quote
Today projects range from the frivolous to the World Community Grid, which studies a variety of problems in biology, medicine and the environment. There are a number of projects under this umbrella Grid, including the Clean Energy Project which tries to find the best organic compounds for solar cells and energy storage devices; and Computing for Clean Water, using the techniques of molecular dynamics to determine the fluid dynamics of water filters that are composed of nanotubes.

Funny how she mentions Moore's Law "effect", which by measure of Fpops throughput does reach about 1/20th 1/10th ** of what Moore's Law is doing... the doubling of computing power every 2 years. One year ago we did ~2.25 TeraFLOPS per computed year, last 7 days ~2.34 TFL/Year, IOW, hardware renewal is way way behind the curve, and after all, we're mostly 'volunteering' spare cycles. :D

Enjoy the read, under the beach umbrella with your kindle :O)

Edit: It's < 1/10th because it's a 2 year measure, WCG's power/unit increased ~4% in the past year.

Nobody said the Moore law will work on grid computing...

& why we have increase (growth) of 5% per year - it's more to go with the policies here on WCG, complications of getting the program to run, setting up science, etc....maybe even WCG can't handle more than 2,5TFL/Y so they aren't interested in growth?

also, some behavior on forum (rudeness), wasn't helpful to some of the new members...

conclusion:
we have what we have, only 5% growth...if we want more, we (ALL) have to become more than we are today!
wink

I'll have to convert it first. My Kindle don't like most PDFs.

Ah, my thinking is always way ahead of myself as if living in 2050 [dreaming ;P], and here we are, not so. Looked this up and apparently you can 'mail' pdf documents to your Kindle and put 'convert' in the subject, to make it Kindle-readyI
In fact, if you've done your homework, you also know that your Kindle (or Kindle app) has its own email address, meaning you can send any PDF straight to your device just by attaching it to an email. (You can find this address in the Kindle's Settings area.)

Unfortunately, most PDFs arrive exactly as they are: static images that aren't optimized for Kindle viewing, and therefore require a lot of zooming and scrolling. If you ask me, they're almost unreadable in this state.

But here's a little-known fact: Amazon will convert your PDF to raw text when you put the word convert in the subject line of the email.

emphasis mine.

For anyone else with the problem: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2044412/conver...no-software-required.html

Calibre does a much better job.

Yes, the article does mention Calibre where 'convert' is seemingly like taking the Mississippi radar boat to China for anything over a few pages.

Nobody said the Moore law will work on grid computing...

Actually, you did, in the Help Stop TB - Crunching Chart forum:

"...my opinion is that Moore law still works on all computing architecture, even on cloud-server structure such as WCG...as the time diminishes for result for every new chip you upgrade on any config of ours!"

Also, in the Outsmart Ebola Togther -- Crunching Chart:

"Given that we got to 1873 batch within 43d...& the total number of batches remain 5463...so we're doing almost 6 batches per day...

A new ECD is given:
- on current speed of computing within 600d from 26th Feb...or to be exact on mid Oct 2017.
- on speedup with Moore law, we'll finish within 470d from 26th Feb...or to be exact start to mid of Jun 2017. "
