Re: Fourth of July - JUNO goes into orbit of Jupiter

Jupiter is ok. Clearing asteroids from Earth's path. Hard to live near it though. So much gravity.

Re: Fourth of July - JUNO goes into orbit of Jupiter

I did a goggle image search for Juno Polar Image

I got a whole page of this : I am going on to the JPL site to see if they have larger file of the planet.

This link has large files that were taken in 2000 with the Cassini Orbiter .
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/details.php?id=PIA07784

As I understand the Juno Mission it will take sequential high resolution shots during each approach from high elliptical. Sort of like orange wedges. The total image will be assembed via many passes.

Re: Fourth of July - JUNO goes into orbit of Jupiter

The image is a composite, the hole in the center indicative, same as various polar sats round earth show this gap because they do not orbit north/south enough. The larger ones not resolving too well, so the one I posted got my preference :O). Juno changes that entirely, designed to pass over the poles and thus getting a true 360 degrees coverage. Really looking forward to the first close-ups with 'Junocam', so close we only get to see snippets, the 37 passes then used to build the global imagery (but this seemingly totally secondary to the science objectives... mostly for PR 'sales' purposes).

Re: Fourth of July - JUNO goes into orbit of Jupiter

Thanks SekeRob that is a better explanation. Was that from the Cassini mission? Also since I heard that the orbit has a 60+ day period. Will the full 37 passes will take the life of mission? I understand the global imagery is designed to be a pretty picture. It also seems that since the atmosphere is dynamic it the "slices" would not line up unless they do some sort of special processing.

Re: Fourth of July - JUNO goes into orbit of Jupiter

You already found it, from Cassini.

Per http://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/nasas-juno-successfully-completes-jupiter-flyby the flyby was successful, 'firing on all cylinders'. It's awesome, that the 36 orbits (37 passes), are timed and shaped in such a fashion to get the right segment observations and measurement as in the animation right bottom of this page http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/press_kits/juno/ with more explanation of the various sciences performed at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/press_kits/juno/science/

How the pictures made are assembled:
Juno rotates twice per minute, so JunoCam's images would be smeared if it were to try to take a complete picture at once. Instead, it is a "push-broom imager," taking thin strips of an image at the same rate that the spacecraft spins. JunoCam then stitches the strips together to form the full picture.
and with the radiation in mind...
The Juno team expects that high-energy particles surrounding Jupiter will eventually damage JunoCam’s electronics to a point where the instrument will have to be shut down permanently. The camera is designed to last for at least seven orbits – enough time to take many pictures.
emphasis mine.

Re: Fourth of July - JUNO goes into orbit of Jupiter

First images and composite videos released. No banding in the polar regions, very first views of south pole [cant be seen from earth, due its -modest- 3.13 degrees tilted axis], chaos and blue hued. http://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/jupiter-s-nor...countered-in-solar-system

Edit: The missionjuno website could give you warnings due incorrect certificate configuration, but it seems save if getting past that. Go https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/org which has 'Why with Nye' episodes (he's Sesame street science pitching for kids :))) Nye on Jupiter channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkZPuJySQ5U
