Single channel memory. Does it restrict crunching?

Hey guys,
So I have a 2P Xeon V3 (2 x 12C/24T) cruncher which is currently running 4 sticks of ram ( 4 x 8GB). Out of the 32GB of ram, it runs at about 25% mem usage on Win 7.

I have need of all that ram in another build and want to buy 16GB for this computer to replace it.
Would I be severly bottlenecking my computer if I had only one stick of 8GB for each processor? It's easier to find 8GB sticks that 4GB sticks.

I am running a Supermicro X10-SRi motherboard if that helps.

Thanks!

Re: Single channel memory. Does it restrict crunching?

My desktop runs on a single 8GB DDR3 strip and records > 99.5% efficiency on W8.1. Having 2 x 4GB or even possible 4 x 2GB on the Mobo is probably optimal, but seems to make imperceptible difference on single threaded crunching as what WCG has.

Single/dual/quad channel doesnt make any difference, neither does ram speed. Use any ram you have or whatever's cheapest.

If it's a dedicated cruncher, you could look into changing to linux.

Setting up ubuntu server is very simple and you'll get much better performance&points as well as lower ram usage.

Maybe 48 threads would like 4 channels as opposed to 1. You could try some benchmarks by removing 3 pieces.

Re: Single channel memory. Does it restrict crunching?

Thanks so much for the replies guys. That is super helpful.
I am glad to see that I can go to single channel as it will make finding memory easier and cheaper for me.

Fuzzydice555 - The currenct cruncher is my day to day computer, so I can't switch that to linux, but the new build will be dedicated and I'll put it on linux for sure. Is server a small footprint linux-based OS?

Enels - I'd love to try that, but I am away and not able to physically access the computer for a few months, so can't try that out.

Yes, ubuntu server is basically ubuntu without the graphical interface.

It is extremely lightweight, but you have to do everything with terminal commands.

Setting one up to crunch is pretty easy though (3-4 commands at most), if you're interested I can write up the basics.

Re: Single channel memory. Does it restrict crunching?

Just because there are that many slots doesn't mean they all need to be used. I have several quad-socket Opteron systems that are using 4 of 32 RAM slots because (aside from CEP2) they don't need that much RAM / memory bandwidth. The extra money that would be spent on RAM is better spent on faster CPUs instead.

Holy smoke, 5.45 Tflops coming from Belarus applause
