I would say I have a normal sized tower case (not full). It has small cutouts in the side of the front face for air intake as well as an 80mm fan side mount. The only other fan mounts are on the rear - 2x 80mm. The case does seem to have poor air flow. I felt around while the computer was on and didn't find the north bridge to be hot. I was actually considering a better air flow case - this may be the solution I go with. Edit: I use TThrottle on all my PCs for CPU/GPU temperature monitoring. I just gave HWMonitor a try and see the max value for "CPUTIN" as 102C with a current value of 48C. It doesn't seem to correlate with the temperatures shown below in the same screen for Cores 1-4 of the processor. If you have a tower case with two exhaust fans, then I don't think it's an airflow issue. If the north bridge didn't feel hot then it's overheating. North bridges can work up to 125C without trouble, so an overheating NB would've burnt your hand. On a SuperMicro X8STi I measured the NB heatsink at 100C when running 100% CPU. A 102C Q9550 is definitely overheating though, so if you're using a stock cooler/small cooler I suggest investing in a proper tower cooler. The Hyper 212 EVO is a solid choice, although smaller 2-3 heatpipe coolers could also work. The 212 EVO has the added benefit of being whisper quiet. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by fuzzydice555 at Jun 8, 2016 7:47:05 PM] |

Is the CPU or GPU overclocked/undervolted by any chance?
73C is hot though for any device made out of silicon, my Q6600 hovers around 40C :) |

Everything is running at stock clocks and voltages.
----------------------------------------I know it was recommended against to use a HTPC case, however this case is not exactly small but seems to have very good air flow. When I get around to it/find the money for it, I plan on this case and getting a 200mm fan for the top fan mount. Other than that, the only thing I can think to do is get a better CPU cooler. RAM testing is planned for this weekend. ![]() |

If the RAM test comes out fine then try and swap out the GPU and powersupply for known good ones if you have spares.
You could also try reseating the CPU. Anyway in case you're looking for a new cooler, I'm using the Noctua in the link below, second hand LGA775 coolers can be bought cheaply second hand now. That specific cooler is probably too big for your case, but Noctua has other nice coolers too. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Noctua-NH-D14-Processor-LGA1366-LGA1156/dp/B002VKVZ1A |

CPU has been reseated. I ran the memory test (on 4x2GB sticks) and got "hardware problem detected." Given it was memtest, I am going to assume it means RAM when it said hardware. I then tested by leaving one stick in and running one pass of the extended test. I added another stick back in and repeated. After inserting the third stick and getting no error, I am guessing the fourth final stick is the one with the error. I didn't want to leave my computer running those tests all day so the final test is running BOINC with 100% cores on these three sticks. It's been a little over 24 hours and so far no problems. I did notice however that my hard drive activity light is a lot more active - I am not sure why since only about 40% of the 6GB of RAM is in use and I am not running any different programs than before.
----------------------------------------If the problem turns out to be resolved with the removal of the one stick of memory, I still aim to invest in a more effective CPU cooler. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by SiKTheGreatOne at Jun 13, 2016 8:50:55 PM] |

On the fourth stick, take a ink eraser and clean the contacts. It will remove tarnish, but not the metal. Then wipe the contacts with a clean dry cloth to remove any eraser "crumbs".
