Re: Nort/southbridge chips

I have not noticed any unusual high temps on mine, but most high(er) end motherboards usually come with some sort of heatsink/fan combo, some even including heatpipes. If you are having issues with overheating, there are aftermarket heatsinks you can install for fairly cheap, or maybe add a well placed case fan that would direct air over the overheating NB/SB.

Re: Nort/southbridge chips

Thanks... I found the problem, some of the fans were getting old/weak and there was not enough air flow through the case.

This is my "FrankenPuter", built with old and new parts from many machines...

Good to hear it was an easy fix. I'm surprised your fan didn't give the tell tale chirp. Mine usually start to chirp when failing, I guess from the bearings going bad.

Re: Nort/southbridge chips

This thing sounds like a KC135 starting up from all the fans :o)

These fans, like most have "thrust bearings' instead of actual ball bearings. A thrust bearing is basically a bushing. They slowly wear one side of the bushing slowing the fan more and more.

Being on a (low) fixed income, you have to work with what you have, hence "Frankenputer" :o)
