biggrin New to crunching

I am running a Intel i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.80GHZ with 16gb RAM running Win 10. I use this rig for gaming but I am a biker/farmer so from spring to fall I don't get much time to game as I spend most of it operating farm equipment or I am on my Ninja 650R. I am wondering would running BOINC on a Linux distro be better then running it under Win 10? Would there be any performance gain? Also would booting a Linux distro from usb reduce performance? I guess what I am getting at is there a way to run a bare bones OS on my rig so it can utilize the hardware for maximum crunching? I have installed BOINC on my Blackberry Priv as well and let it run while it is charging and I plan on setting it up on my little netbook. biggrin

Re: New to crunching

Maybe I'm showing the crunching years ;O), but yes Linux will give you twice as fast results on certain sciences than Windows, specifically, Ebola and Zika... the other science apps perform close enough.

Twice as fast means 1 hour on Linux takes 2 hours on Windows, and half as fast, if 2 hours on Windows take 1 hour on Linux. :D

Performance wise Linux full GUI Ubuntu or SlimJim makes only fractional difference... count seconds in an hour.

Happy crunching (and hope your harvest does not turn El NinĂ´ dustbowl or gets spun up by some out of season Tornado).

Re: New to crunching

thank you for the info, but what about running Ubuntu off of usb flash drive? The problem is I have two 1TB hard drives about full and I don't have room for even a small linux partition though I guess I could always make room by uninstalling some of the games.

I live in Central Illinois there is no such thing as "Out of season Tornado" because there is always a chance of tornado here :-P

Re: New to crunching

There are a couple of Linux distros that are designed to run from usb and having loaded they run entirely in memory.

The catch with these is that they do things somewhat differently file system wise.

If you want to learn how they work and how to get boinc on them in a manner that saves the setup rather than discarding it when you shut the machine down then be prepared to spend a little time reading and learning.

The two that I know of are Fatdog64 (which I have used) and Porteus that I have only recently read about.

Re: New to crunching

A large (16GB that I know of) USB drive can have say, Ubuntu or Linux Mint, installed and with persistent storage, so it would save BOINC and everything you do there.

- AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W

I have one server which has been running Linux Mint on a 16gb flashdrive for almost a year. It has 8 cores and space has not been an issue. I have no HD's on this system to save electricity. I used Pendrive to install the OS as persistent and bootable. I used the "Easy as 1 2 3 " option.
Cheers

Re: New to crunching

I dug out a 8gb flash drive and installed Ubuntu with 2gb for storage (persistence). I will reboot my rig after I finish my tasks. I would like to thank everyone for their support. Maybe by time I get back from test driving a Case 277B (Turbo) I will get time to get it going.
