We're excited to announce that World Community Grid has been nominated for a Webby People's Voice Award, often called "the Oscars of the internet." Being nominated is an honor and a big deal, but we need your help to win!
Please vote today and help us spread the word! More details, read our article. As always, thanks for your support! Juan |

Done....but not without a moment of reluctance. Why? I voted for IBM (WCG) not because of IBM but because of the technical admins. Kevin and Keith have been the most visible of this group but there have been plenty of others. They got WCG up and running, got the new projects boarded and out, dealt with the problems and issues, and have been the FACE of WCG to us who have volunteered. We can promote WCG all we can but they are the ones that keep us from looking like we're crazy by keeping it running as well as it has and by listening and responding to us. There's a limit to what they can do though and therein is where my reluctance crept in. Every project will have a hiccup or two despite the betas but the frustrations with the start of OET led me to do something I hadn't done in over eleven years crunching for WCG - I didn't start crunching on HSTB the day it was launched (and still haven't). I understand the importance of timing. For the research scientists, announcing a project on a day focused on that subject (World YB Day and such) may be your only chance to get any real coverage from the general media. Getting the word out then can make a big difference in attracting new volunteers for whom that subject is personally meaningful. More attention on your research project can't hurt its chances in the never-ending battle for grant money. For those of us who have been volunteering over the years, we are much more familiar with WCG's past track record. For someone new, getting a project started and started right is the primary basis on which they form their opinion and attachment to WCG and the causes it seeks to further. With the technological shift from desktops and laptops to tablets and mobile phones, reliance on "old" technology makes it that much harder for us volunteers to look credible. Launching projects clearly before they are ready just to meet a date, admittedly an important date none the less, benefits no one in the long run. I'm not saying to ditch making dates but to make them in the right way. A new project can still be announced on these dates when it's "packaged" the right way. If the betas have uncovered existing issues or haven't had sufficient opportunity to uncover them, the scientists can still announce a "partnership" with IBM/WCG to launch a new project to research (whatever), a project that WCG is already currently beta testing with its thousands and thousands of global volunteers, testing that is expected to be completed in the coming days/weeks. I understand that WCG doesn't make the launch decision or launch date on its own but if it's truly a partnership between WCG and the scientists, getting it done right and meeting those "political/visible/important/critical" dates can be possible. First impressions matter and a good start matters to us "oldsters". Don't wear us down. Don't drive us away.

[despise +1 posts without adding anything], but keithhenry's verbose comment puts it right there... something went south https://bit.ly/WCGCPUY and something is speaking up with feet first, as right now it reads like there's a pile-up, and no insurance company to revert to.
Would I like WCG to get the award? Yes, but at least from the box-office grossing of the latest Batman movie we know that critics can have it entirely wrong. Please proof us wrong! |
