I have noticed that the stderr log for all my work units reports my operating system as windows 8.1 when in reality it is running windows 10. I know that it detects some computers as running windows 10 because I have seen it in other stderr outputs. Its not causing any problems so far as I can tell, but thought it was kind of interesting and might let someone know in case it is significant at some point.

You need to upgrade BOINC to have it communicate the new version of Windows.

I had downloaded what I thought was the most recent version onto this computer... It is new and came installed with win10. Is there something I missed?

It's hard to assess what your 'most recent' is when you don't tell what that version is you pulled. Here's a link to a post that contains all the references to versions, that will properly recognize W10, + it takes care of another problem that's pestering WCG.
