Hello everyone,
wondering how some fellow crunchers can thankfully achive such large contributions and badges of 100 years of contribution, I came to the conclusion, that one possible way is runing BOINC on what I call small devices. i.e. raspberry odroid maybe so called TV stics. Since we unfortunately do not have a special forum for this topic at the time being, I decided to make a collection of threads which are about this topic. I will check all threads by hand. For now, goiing from page 1 until page 30 I found the following: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,37762 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,36748 In my next post on this thread, I will search more threads on the topic: BOINC on low -space, low cost devices. The goal of this thread colliction is to make it easier for newbies to achive large contributions and good badges. All the best and keep crunching MS |

Your assumption/conclusion is only valid as long as android is supported by a project.
----------------------------------------Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of these small devices too and they deliver 1/4th of my daily output here at wcg, but what will happen when OET ends in may (I suppose) is absolutely unclear. |

And the nature of the beast is that some people use PC's at their work place. Some of us have server grade equipment in our homes amassing a couple hundred cores into a hand full of devices. And then of course there are those of us that also have a small phARM of Android devices. Last I counted, I was sitting somewhere around 50 cores of various speeds and generations in my home just from smart phones. Since WCG can't utilize all of them, they are spread out across various BOINC projects. But no, the people with 100 years of run time typically have a large amount of CPU cores at their disposal.

Hello everyone,
thank you for the comments to this thread. I will react to them later. For now: I have gone up to page 50 in the suggestions forum. Found one more thread, that points in the direction of „little devices“ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,25809_offset,10 Deided to ad it to the „thread collection“ because a computer without disk is little. And one really useful thread on the Adnroid forum: Best bang for the buck. Android (!!!) device http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,38025_offset,0#491901 That is all for now. All the best MS |

well, if you're going with DISKLESS, then:
----------------------------------------- use smaller MBOs with built in GPUs...no GPU projects on WCG (except the past 1, so it's 1/22)...& put the slowest CPU with most cores on it...so it can crunch as much WUs in a day, with slowest speed...that way you get the benefit of getting the badge, but slowing down the overall project! 2. try to find some fan-less PSU...those will be quiet! 3. use only needed RAM...no need to use more electricity! check here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ead,38611_offset,0#507153 is you are up on Androids, you got several options: 1. TV sticks 2. TV cubicles (separate of TV, stay next to it, crunching science) 3. Raspberry PI or similar ARM proc based with Android 4. old Android mobiles with ARM procs ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by KLiK at Jan 24, 2016 11:55:37 AM] |

Indeed members with "large" contribution are mostly long terms members with multi-core systems.
----------------------------------------On my side, I joint WCG 9 years ago with one hyper-threaded Pentium 4. Years after years, some additional hosts came to the pool, replacing old (poorly efficient) systems. Since I do not have an unlimited budget, the systems are operated conservatively (no over-clocking, regular cleaning, etc) and they are not the fastest (e.g. no i7 extreme edition). I decided to support WCG only. For this reason, I am not really concerned with GPU (I operated only one GPU for the final phase of the first Cancer project). I do not operate currently small devices. Regarding ARM, I am not really willing to operate Android devices, I would much more prefer to have Boinc client and sciences for Raspberry Pi (2) based on Debian Jessie. I should reach 200 years contribution (and 300 millions points) in a couple of months, nevertheless it took over 9 years ! ... Happy crunching, Yves |

Intel have introduced a new quad core, Atom based compute stick for $160, including Win10:
