MacBook Pro - handling the heat

Currently I'm crunshing on a Thinkpad W series which seems to handle 12+ hours of 100% CPU load easily. Now my employer (who allows WCG to run) is offering MacBook Pros as replacements as well and I am considering switching.

My fear is that MacBooks, even the Pro series, are less designed for permanent full load and might have components die prematurely due to the heat.

Is there someone here who can share his or her experience with using MacBook Pros for WCG?

Re: MacBook Pro - handling the heat

If your employer is offering new MacBook Pros, Wiki says the i5 CPU has a TDP of 28 watts. The i7 47 watts. 47 watts may be too hot and need to be throttled somehow.

Re: MacBook Pro - handling the heat

well for Win-PC you can use TThrottle...

for a MacBook, you'd have to use BOINC manual setting...or a slowdown with CPU setting... confused

Re: MacBook Pro - handling the heat

Well I'd like not to have to throttle. So if that is necessary for MacBooks, I'd probably opt for a new Thinkpad instead (and live with the worse display and clumpier device).

why?

my old T60 & T61 use this one:
http://efmer.com/b/?q=tthrottle_download_version
in setup is 100% of CPU time...

so science is just throttled down...but the CPU time is almost 100%...good for the badges also, but also less heat in a room & more stable system!
btw, it's set to crunch on 80-85% of CPU Tjunc!
cool

BOINC throttling will get you less CPU time! wink

Re: MacBook Pro - handling the heat

More time towards the badges is nice, but I want to contribute as much as my system allows. Therefore I don't mind more heat, I just want to make sure that heat doesn't destroy my machine too early.

Re: MacBook Pro - handling the heat

You can always set BOINC itself to "use at most n% of CPU time", and process according preferences [else the Run Always overrides]. You don't want to burn any machine, then your boss ending the permission to crunch altogether.

Re: MacBook Pro - handling the heat

For people using Tthrottle is there a specific temp that you use? For example 60c? I have a lenovo Thinkpad T420 and have been trying to find the recommended temp, but had no luck. I belive it is an i7 cpu.

Re: MacBook Pro - handling the heat

I didn't/don't have any problems with my older Core 2 Duo 13" MacBook Pro, though the newer and thinner ones probably have a more restricted airflow.

Using a cooling pad is optional, although I've found that just using a book or something to allow more airspace under the computer helps as well, for laptop computers of all persuasions.

Regarding Tthrottle, the target temperature depends on the maximum allowable temperature for your CPU, I usually set mine at about 80% of that.

Re: MacBook Pro - handling the heat

Hi noderaser,

Sounds good, thanks for explaining that. So I see that max temp of the processor is 100 then set it to 80c and just let it run?
