but Linux is a 20-25% faster on OET of FA@h research...
----------------------------------------![]() on those machines a a HT can be used 4 2 tasks execution... also, a GPU computing is possible, if u wanna get a card which supports it! btw those machines r a big heaters...so use them from fall 2 spring time! notice that u'd have to install 1GB of RAM 2 use machine properly... ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by KLiK at Sep 8, 2015 5:52:32 AM] |

Is 256MB even enough for WCG and the OS?

I have decided to go with linux when I get it running. If nothing else, it will be a good learning experience. I used to have a moderate sized crunching farm a few years back (old username: skivelitis) so I have plenty of old RAM sticks lying about... shound be able to get it to at least 1GB. Will hyperthread for sure. Unfortunately, no pci-e slot for graphics card.

For most everyone OET1 (and FAHV of the FA@H project) is ~60% faster on Linux/Mac compared to Windows, so if you have multiple platforms/devices or multi-boot, being selective in which gets crunched on what, can substantially increase one's contribution [in results].
Graphics cards are not employed at WCG, but newer OSses do offload certain activities on their own to the GPU, i.e. more cycles for the CPU tasks :D. (Hardware Speedup or something like that is a term I see at times with my Office applications). |

Unfortunately, no pci-e slot for graphics card. u can get ATi RadeonHD 3850 or 4650/4670 - which can crunch with P4 proc: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=77269&postid=1674610 @ least on SETi@home btw, there r good step-by-step lines how to install BOINC on Linux...depending on which 1 would u use...Google it! ![]() |

If you were really interested in adding GPU capability (for other projects) in those machines, Newegg has some Radeon HD series units in both AGP and PCI, though I don't know if their throughput would really be worth the investment.
----------------------------------------Most WCG subprojects don't have too high a memory requirement except CEP2; even so, I think you'd want at least 1-2 GB with both threads running. |
