I have two pretty much Identical computers that have no NIC's
----------------------------------------To get internet I have a usb to rj45 dongle I hook one up get a load of work and start crunching. If I now connect said dongle to the other machine in an attempt to repeat it downloads new work units and starts crunching If I re-attach to the original machine it cancels running jobs and starts over. I am guessing then that the dongle has a mac address and it is THAT which WCG uses to identify a machine not the name of the machine as I originally thought. Can any of you think of a work around to save having to purchase more of these dongles. Will <suppress_net_info> flag in cc.config do the trick? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by OldChap at Sep 7, 2015 8:20:33 PM] |

This doesn't answer your question, but can't you just get another dongle and use an ethernet switch? I have 2 levels of switches between some machines and my router and they work fine.
----------------------------------------Another option which might cost less is to get a wireless gateway and then a couple of cheap wifi dongles. ![]() ![]() |

A few thoughts:
----------------------------------------It may be possible to assign a MAC to the adapter (LAA?). Do you suspend networking before swapping ? Loss of network can cause BOINC to abort tasks. If both have firewire you could use that to connect one to another and bridge the LAN. Paul.

Smells like someone cloned the BOINC installs. Remember, on first adding WCG, some unique IDs are assigned and hashed. That's what's recognized on re-connection. For sure, my multiboot, each OS having a BOINC install is never mixing up as to which is communicating over the same MAC/NIC/IP.

Actually I have a couple of bl460c blades running without the c3000/7000 enclosure so the only way to get connected to them is using the diagnostic socket on the froont this gives me 2 usb plus vga. on an adapter. I plug the keyboard into one the internet dongle into the other and mouse into the keyboard.
----------------------------------------The separately made mint installs have different hostnames and boinc/wcg was from the repository in each case (a day apart) The only difference in hardware is one has 24GB ram the other 48GB currently testing the second having put <suppress_net_info> into cc.config and reset project. I will eventually get a c7000 up to this top floor but it weighs a ton (well 100KG+ anyway) I will try suspending networking tomorrow too. then attempt to run both at once. They are in a wooden box with psu and fans by the way. ![]() |

IIRC, long time ago asked about the MAC-Code tracking at WCG, and the reply was NO!
This work erasing does not make sense, moving the dongle, but would start by hardcoding the IP address on each of these hosts, regardless if your router is set to DHCP. [Which mine is, but has preferred IPs set with each MAC code as override, for all hosts, so there's no IP conflicts for the fixed devices, guest connections getting the leftover as determined by DHCP]. Why you want to suppress network info for the specific case, don't want to know, just that this prevents the hostname being sent to WCG. The identification is still based on the mentioned unique ID [which you can see in the event log as something like WCG.... Computer ID: 1234567]. Assigned tasks are then listed on the Result Status pages with CID... 1234567. --Demi Wiz |

These blades come with a usb port fitted internally on the MB described thus:
----------------------------------------Internal USB Support: One (1) internal USB 2.0 connector for security key devices and USB drive keys What do you think the odds are for being able to run a wifi stick from this (on an extension lead)?? Need a plug and play stick to try. I hear Panda and Trendnet might be good..... Thoughts anyone? ![]() |

We have several systems like that at our work that have the internal USB on the motherboard. On most occasions, we use them for hasp keys, but if I plug in a USB flash drive it still recognizes it. Haven't tried an input device, but if it sees a flash drive, should see a mouse or keyboard just fine. |

There has been mention of WCG/Boinc looking at hardware specs such as processor/speed/ram as part of the identification process so I set one blade to run at 1.6 and the other @ 2.9 with double the ram in the former.
----------------------------------------Fresh install of mint and boinc and....... It takes out the original work running on the other machine when using the same adapter..... Thinking it must surely be the mac addr that is the key I have set this in mint on this low speed rig. On reboot (in 24 hours or after I have some performance figures) it should now be very different and maybe then I can run these two concurrently ![]() |

Told you [oh no we don't do that, proposed] to at least change one thing, because if you unplug your dongle and plug in the other machine, the router - the key in your mess - assigns probably the same IP.
