Learning how this works

I'm not new to forums but I don't see evidence of being logged in here so I'm testing the waters before I try composing something more important. I'll be asking about the difference between this and distributed computing because Wikipedia isn't clear enough on that.

peace

You're not the only one who can't see if logged in or signed out. One of the beanspillers is having the quick reply box at bottom of a forum thread.

Don't ask, there's many resources outside Wikipedia explaining distributed computing... a big analysis project broken up in discrete pieces so many non-homogeneous computing devices can solve a fraction of a search and then all those put together given a big output set that scientists use to find for instance the compounds with the most promise. Quasi parallel computing to get the answer in months or years instead of decades, each package computed independently.

Very basic.

Re: Learning how this works

Actually it was the List of distributed computing projects article that wasn't clear. It puts WCG under "Grid computing projects" separate from Distributed computing projects. It distinguishes them by saying "While distributed computing functions by dividing a complex problem among diverse and independent computer systems and then combine the result, grid computing works by utilizing a network of large pools of high-powered computing resources." So I was thinking I'd need some kind of high-powered computer for WCG. Luckily I did more research and an ordinary computer seems OK.

Re: Learning how this works

Welcome to the World Community Grid BarryII.
Just about any Windows, Linux or Mac will work. Though I did have to retire an old Windows XP Gateway Desktop because it was to small to run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. When I have time I'll install a linux package with a smaller memory requirements.

Again, Welcome

Re: Learning how this works

There's some ancient and obsolete stuff around on the intertubes. A 'grid' is as you now understand just the assembly of those many private, college, company computers, does not matter where on this 3rd rock from the sun, running most anything Windows/Mac/Linux/Android, albeit with a minimum version requirement. For hahaha, could even run off the ISS computers if they signed up **, and these are known to be a little older but very robust biggrin

WCG is also known as an 'Umbrella project' since really we crunch for multiple 3rd parties, WCG acting as hosting station, the middleware if you will.

** If that could be peddled with NASA, to show how save it is, that'd be a true kick-off point to give BOINC a solid fuel 3rd stage rocket booster . silly
