Fresh install of Mint, Boinc loaded using software manager and later loaded from CLI
----------------------------------------In both instances Boinc manager opens but options are greyed out/unable to use This scenario was presented to me in email and seems to me to be a permissions issue. Logic says that the Mint install has some form of additional log in requirement but.... I would love some insight as to why this might be. ![]() |

Few possibles, boinc daemon is not running or the cc_config.xml has adding projects disabled.
Most often su or sudo ** is used as pre to launching anything that might have different permissions than the person giving the cli instructions. ** The difference: http://www.howtogeek.com/111479/htg-explains-...fference-between-sudo-su/ Off again... |

I had this issue on Mint (newly installed).
----------------------------------------I went to the data folder and there were few files, one "all projects" something had simply a message saying "On August 1 the BOINC servers crashed,.,," Using the URL of the projects works. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

How connecting to projects has anything to do with the Berkeley server is a riddle to me, but they -ARE- down:
The BOINC web server is down On Saturday morning (August 1st) the BOINC web server crashed, and will remain down until further notice. Their forums and download pages are down too! Testing the download link on the WCG page, the Linux version is hosted here too, so 7.2.42 is for now the sole copy available, unless other mirrors exist, that is, of course the Linix distro repo's will have them too. |

TBH I don't know if it has anything to do with the BOINC servers, but I simply had no projects available to attach to. And I had that message in the data folder which I confirmed by going to the BOINC page.

Sometimes Linux can be really stupid when trying to connect the Manager to the client, even if the client is already running. On Linux Mint, the easiest way I have found to avoid any connection problems between the two is to create a Quick Link for Boinc Manager and then edit its properties and add the location of the data directory so it will always connect. The entry for command should look something like the following:
/usr/bin/boincmgr --datadir=/var/lib/boinc-client/ |

Bad news, first --data_dir was broken [since longer], then they removed it from I think 7.6, maybe 7.4. At any rate, the tag has not worked in the cc_config.xml since quite a while. Bad action too as it helped moving the data_dir without having to go through the uninstall, install cycle [on Windows], and on Linux, if you wished the DD to be somewhere else, but then you can always symlink

Thanks for that infomation, SekeRob. I didn't realize that argument had been removed from the command line options, as I am using 7.2.42 on Linux Mint.
Just checked and the Quick Link works fine with --namehost=127.0.1.1 and --password=mypassword so in the future when an update takes the manager past 7.2.42 I can edit the command to adjust. |

Never succeeded in having BOINC mgr connect to daemon when there's a password in the gui_rpc_auth file on Ubuntu. It comes as blank on Ubuntu and I've left it consequently blank [after much T&T to get it to work].
TBH, since it is in a plain text file, this security to link to localhost is pro forma anyhow. In BM leaving host name and password field blank when selecting a computer connects you anyhow, by default. The important bit is the connecting to a project, where this password is FAIK not stored. Once the account file has been populated with the authenticator code, any PW becomes non-required for as long as the relation is not broken. |
