Help needed by a new user. I installed the agent on a Win2000 machine and it is working fine. I registered myself and I'm seeing my stats. However, I installed the agent on a multi-user Win XP Home machine and everytime I log on, the agent asks me to re-register. So now I have this device registered multiple times even though it's the same device. Why is the agent asking me to re-register everytime I start up the machine?
Perhaps it has something to do with my installation procedure, which I document here: I installed the agent from a user called Owner who has Admin priveledges. I then moved the agent from Owner's startup folder to the Shared Folder's startup folder so that no matter which user (4 others) start the machine, the agent works. The agent appears to work normally, i.e. it runs without prompting to register, when one of the other 4 users is on. But for Owner, it asks to re-register. Any suggestions? |

It is hard to tell from a distance what is going on. But here are a few things to check. Make sure all of the users have full access rights to the install directory for World Community Grid. Double check that the program in the startup folder is pointed at UD.exe within that install directory. Make sure they are all pointed to the same install directory and that the startup folder link gives that directory as the "Start in" folder too. If the "Owner" id has it both in the Owners and shared startup folder, remove the one in the Owners startup folder. You might scan your disk to see if it might be installed in more than one place somehow. If the agent is installed in some sort of temp directory where some of its files might be erased or overwritten by something other than the agent software, then that might cause this problem. You might want to run a full virus scan with the latest updates to make sure a virus of some sort is not being launched (which might be damaging the agent files) when the "Owner" id logs on. That is all I can think of at the moment that might cause this problem.

Viktors, thanks for the suggestions. I checked all your points and everything seems to be in order. It is installed in C:\ Program Files\World Community Grid. The startup is only in the All Users Startup folder, not in Owner's, and it points to UD.exe in the install location. It also starts in the same directory, according to the shortcut. I searched the machine and it's only in the one directory.
It seems that once I re-register, the agent runs fine. But next time, I start the machine, it forgets that I registered. Where does it store this status info? Is it possible it's not recording the registration event, thus always asking to start over? What else can I check? Failing that, if I uninstall/reinstall, can you suggest an alternate installation procedure that will avoid the problem? |

Question. The only change you made was moving the startup shortcut. If you create a second shortcut (to UD.exe) and put it on the desktop as Owner, what behavior does it give you if you click on it manually? (assuming that the Agent is not running for Owner) What I want is to check on the one change that you made to the system. This is not normal behavior.

Hmmm further information here. The grid agent isn't really running under the Owner userid, but it is running under the others. I just ran a test where I logged on to a different ID and the agent started normally. Then I logged off that ID and switched back to Owner, and the agent started with the registration request again. If I close that window and just run the agent from the All Programs menu, it goes to the registration request. So it would appear that the agent doesn't recognize the registration under Owner, but it does under others. Ideas?

The file cs.ud contains your registration. So if this is erased, or the agent does not have write access to it, it will act like it has to reregister.
You might scan your hard drive for other copies of ud.exe and cs.ud. What happens if you go ahead and register the agent under the Owner id? |

I am not sure that I understand all that I read here. Further I do not know if the following will work on XP home but I have it working on multiple XP Pro machines.
