Hi Zerocoil, and welcome to the board. smile

If you have any type of Internet connection on your home PC, I'd be tempted to download the agent to that PC too. That way you would increase your contribution significantly, even if the home Internet connection were only 56k. The more, the merrier.

If you decide to do that, make sure that you use the same user name as you did for the PC at work, but use a different device name.

Best of luck with your efforts here.

I have never done this but there is a guide that someone posted over on the UD Grid board. It looks to me like it should work here.

Here is the pointer .

Yes, it's possible, but it'll become a small logistical nightmare.

Why don't you simply install a second agent on your home computer and let both run? Your account can have multiple devices under your account.

Did I read this incorrectly? I thought it said that there was a faster PC at home but not an internet connection.

RT, I think you did read it correctly, and I think the link your provided would work as a soultion.

As Alther points out, it can become complicated... but dedicated crunchers can do it!

Re: Can i take home where there is no connection?

I've done the offline thing in the link RT posted before(though with the grid.org version, should be the same here), it's not too complicated after you figure things out, just a matter of copying files back and forth. USB flash drives come in handy for it. smile Also, you might use a combination of both RT's and VAIO's links...downloading multiple units with udmon so that you have more work available if you don't have an internet connection at home... smile

Re: Can i take home where there is no connection?

;
As I understand how the grid concept work, the data needs to be downloaded to the same PC that will do the work, and that PC needs to have an internet connection.

Q. Why the need for the same PC?
A. The grid server needs to know what machine did the work and to tie-in the data that was earlier downloaded to credit the output (the machine's upload) to the machine.

Q. Why the need for an Internet connection?
A. Part of the upload contains the data about the machine. When machine_A downloads the data and machine_B does the work, and later machine_A uploads the data (using an Internet link), the server will read machine_A and what does it see? No work done by machine A! Why? well, machine B (assuming this is withOUT Internet link) did the work, but cannot communicate with the grid server.

If you want your home machine to be credited for the work it did, install (if not yet installed) the client software on that machine and hook the machine up to the Internet. You need to hook up to the internet ONLY AFTER the client software finished working on the particular earlier downloaded data.

Hope this helps.
BTW: May I suggest that you try to read in and around the World Community Grid website to get a deeper understanding of the concept.

assuming it works the same as grid.org...and since they basically use the same software...then not necessarilly. from computer a, install wcg in a second directory, so it runs like a completely different install and assigns it a different machine id. run the second install, register and download new unit, stop it, transfer the entire folder to computer b, then run it there.... assuming you will keep it running on computer a, make sure you run computer a using the original install. when computer b finishes, transfer the folder back to computer a, send in and download a new unit from computer a(making sure you stop the install of wcg running on computer a as it won't work if you run at the same time), then move that folder back to computer b again. mostly a matter of keeping track of which is which... (i suppose overall you probably don't need to transfer the entire folder, but it makes it less complicated)

it's been a while since i've done this, but that's the basic gist of things...it has worked well for me in the past.
