Several times today I manually set my machine to get new WUs for CEP2 and got the message "no tasks are available for The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2". Am I just unlucky with my timing today or are the coffers empty today?

select the option to send you some other work...until the CEP2 is available again! ;) Indeed I have! I got a flood of MCM, UGM and FA@H to keep me occupied. Gotta get my usage out of these machines, after all ;)![]() |

It looks like the feeder is empty. My workstation is cooling off. :)

I guess now is a good time to do all the updating, short-stroking and defragging of HDDs.
----------------------------------------Saying this because I've just resurrected an old machine which I used to crunch on but ran out of SSDs and had to fall back on a HDD and usb 3 flash drives. It brought back nightmares of the good old days of watching wu resetting and losing days work because I hadn't installed Boinc/CEP2 on the fastest partitions...... Never again :-)! Running CEP2 on a L5430 with 4GB on 3 cores and it seems to be behaving.... for now. Better get to work before the feeders come back online!! ![]() "Sadly this project is turning into nonscience......" [Edit 1 times, last edit by Gatchaman at May 3, 2015 6:03:58 PM] |

You should be able to run 4 WU per regular HD with no problems, unless the drive is very old, or you are running other demanding tasks in concert. I have done (a lot) of testing with CEP.

----------------------------------------The system should be back up and running now. Thanks, Paul. Did you put up your results anywhere? Wish I'd known that when I first bumped into CEP so many moons ago. Sticking SSDs in every box cured boinc/ qchem of dumping hours/days of work. I think I made the mistake of putting the data directory in a 2nd slower partition on the HDD when I first began crunching. Will open up the cpu to 100% and see what happens. ![]() "Sadly this project is turning into nonscience......" |

I, too, have had problems with resetting CEP2 work units. I've been running 13 CEP2 threads out of 24 threads, the others are UGM, and 5-10% of the CEP2 wus have been resetting after the computers have been crunching for more than a few days.
----------------------------------------After I read your comment yesterday, I shrank the C-volumes on my computers to 60% of the total size. That's all I could shrink them and it's probably not enough, but I've ordered 2.5" single platter, 7200rpm, 500Gb HDDs , and when they arrive I'll do clean OS installs on volumes that are less than 20% of total size, around 80GB. I'll use HDtune to determine the size. Thanks for the short-stroke tip, Gatchaman. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 4, 2015 9:13:37 PM] |

Gatchman,
----------------------------------------Not that I recall. This was done ~2 years while optimizing the workstation. I tested multiple configurations while monitoring the queue depth and response time. There is a document from the CEP scientists which lists 4-6 per drive as the target. If you search for my posts in the CEP section you will see the link. TBMS, I was running 16 WU on a 5 drive raid 5 array with no issues. However I use this for other purposes and it was impacting other usage. I migrated the Boinc data directory to a Intel X25E SSD. I bought a few of them on ebay a couple years ago. For this large number of units, its the way to go in my opinion. The drive now has 395 TB of writes, and the MWI is at 97%.
