I've noticed that the points my BOINC clients are claiming and receiving for OET1 are in rapid decline. It's on all my devices, which have now all earned reliability and thus usually no longer have wingman to average out their claims.
----------------------------------------Here are 2 examples which have got to about 2 points per hour. A third example is where I was wingman and you can see the huge mismatch in the claims. This is going to reduce my points haul to about 1.5K per day, when it has been averaging about 70K per day on all other projects (and indeed on the first phase of OET in December). Any ideas as to why this is happening an what can be done about it? I could switch to another project but with health workers in West Africa risking their lives every day to contain this disease, to me this project has an immediacy not matched by any other. The Points are falling because BOINC doesn't cope well with science projects with variable WU runtimes.

I am still seeing way more points on OET1 than I probably deserve. Linux Mint Core2Duo 2.66ghz.Here is a sample:

I stopped worrying about points a long time ago. If points were the primary driver WGC is close to the worst place to be. Other projects "pay" far more.
----------------------------------------This is where I dedicate ALL my CPU power because I think it will do good. I focus on run-time over points. Sure, you can have a fleet of ancient machines slowly chugging away to manipulate the totals, but a single 24 thread machine will wipe the floor on such users. Besides, a person would only be cheating themselves. The points go up, the points go down, it all averages in the end. ![]() |

The important thing is the units get crunched so the research gets done. Cheers

Sgt. Joe and KWSN-A Shrubbery,
----------------------------------------I believe the points are very important. The person with the most points at the end gets.... well.... errr... OK, they get nothing. Except maybe an acknowledgment of their contribution. History has shown that in the long run people stay involved when they're credited for their effort. Be it money, points or gold stars people want some sort of measure of their involvement. The credit system really does need to be looked at. DadX BTW - Some of us have little but older "value" machines with which to contribute. I did retire my P4's some years ago, but I do have Raspberry and Android machines working on other projects. ![]() |

While I won't claim to have a full grasp on how points work, I'm guessing the issue is that the super short ~10 minute OET tasks tend to get 10-20 points each while the moderate ~1 hour tasks tend to get 30-40 points. The calculation appears to be skewed a bit on short tasks, since you can get double the points with short tasks completed within the same timeframe of a moderate task.
I had an amazing spike in points yesterday because I had almost all short OET tasks, but today the daily total dropped almost back to normal (compared to crunching long 12+ hour OETs for a few days and all UGM before that) with almost all moderate OET tasks all day. So I guess the issue lies with calculating points on the short tasks, and those were the ones being crunched yesterday. But yeah, in the end it doesn't matter all that much. Run time per day is more interesting to me anyway, even though that has the flaw of not representing actual computational power. |

I focus on the amount of results myself.

The army chief ;P
Where would the points rate in [negative topic] frequency on the WCG forums? Though it's basically meaningless, to me, how many results in a day, 24 hours is still 24 hours, had 626 validated yesterday and jumped rank from 1992 to 1983 on that scale. ![]() |
