I am running Linux Ubuntu 14.10 and BOINC client version 7.4.8 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.

Post the whole startup log. If e.g. you have chosen to only allow GPGPU work, you wont get any CPU work ;>)

On the website device profile, under Advanced Options / Processor Usage make sure Allow research to run on my CPU? is set to Yes.
