Re: Windows 10 login

I'll stick with 7. Aside from Apple, 8 was the worst OS ever written and 10 isn't much better. Geeks at Microsoft still can't get it through their thick head that most of the world does not use touch screen laptops and tablets and never will. There's just no place in most of the business world for touchscreens. The so called reinstallation of the START button is a joke, it does not display any of the normal START button features.
On another note, most machines more than 3 years old are very likely going to have compatibility issues with hardware, most of which are either going to require either replacement of said hardware or driver updates which will most likely be over the heads of your average person. SO now they've gone from a working machine to a trip to their local shop.
Then there's the unspoken side of 10. It's a resource hog. I have it on my PC at work (1 year old Core i7, 16gb ram) Just sitting idle doing nothing 10 uses 32% of the RAM and overall operation of the machine is slower than the old P4-1.6 (XP) I use for inventory maintenance.

Re: Windows 10 login

W10 and W7-8 to an extend too, preloads/keeps stuff in RAM 'in anticipation'. Why not use the 16GB... it is there for the need for speed? [It hides the frailties for sure].

After months W10 actually is not so bad [not worth a penny though to upgrade], runs on my 10 year anniversaried Q6600 with just 2GB working Ram, BUT, as it is multiboot, going to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with full GUI, and the machine flies, still. Shuts down in under 5 seconds, when W10 needs a minutes plus [not to speak of the endless boot requests when Linux only needs it occasionally for a new kernel to load].
Hibernating is the tip though, do that and W10 comes up reasonably quick on power-on.

Anyway, I''m holding off semi-permanently and see what this Threshold 2 is supposed to improve [still have the start system and cortana crashing, so it says, there is no Cortana for my language version though]. devilish

Re: Windows 10 login

If you want to insert the 'look at me Oh.CD', say it right and don't sent people off with half-baked statements... it's called ReadyBoost and not Boostdrive and
Does ReadyBoost actually improve Windows performance?

Removable devices may quickly read and write data but when it comes to storing data, your RAM will win out every time. Unless your PC has a small amount of RAM, ReadyBoost will not work for you. In fact, you probably won’t even be able to enable it. If that’s the case, you’ll never be able to try ReadyBoost to see if it works with your PC. That’s a good thing, that means your PC is up to par and can handle the load that ReadyBoost tries to improve.

RAM outperforms this Readyboost ALWAYS. It only helps a little during boot-up, and probably only when using an old spindle and not an SSD.

16GB Ram... the answer to that is:
When should you use ReadyBoost?

If you’re using less than 1 GB of RAM, it’s possible ReadyBoost will have a slight impact on your performance. However, if you’re using that little RAM, it may be time to buy a new PC or supplement your RAM instead of relying on ReadyBoost to make the performance difference for you. ReadyBoost can only improve performance in Windows when used on a high-quality, high-capacity removable device. Often, those devices can still cost hundreds of dollars, making a RAM upgrade more desirable with better results.

Emphasis mine.

Re: Windows 10 login

well, I've had different practical use for ReadyBoost:
- starting programs is FASTER...much more than on HDD! even in RAIDs...
- using frequent accessed files, keeps HDD off reading...so protects it from frequent access...
- overall speed of system is much more fluent...

those are only my experiences... wink

Re: Windows 10 login

16/11/2015: It will now be easier than ever to carry out a clean install of Windows 10. Microsoft has made changes within the latest Windows 10 update that allows users to carry out an install of the latest OS from scratch using a Windows 7 or 8.1 key.

Prior to this, users of Windows 7 or 8.1 first had to complete a direct upgrade to the new OS, allow it to be verified by Microsoft and only then do a clean install and start from scratch.

With the Threshold 2 update, users can deploy Windows 10 and then use their license to activate the new copy of the operating system.

http://www.itpro.co.uk/operating-systems/2311...release-date-and-specs-24 also discusses
12/11/2015: Windows 10 November update, also known as Fall update and Threshold 2, has started rolling out to the 110 million Windows 10 around the world.

The update - the first major update since Windows 10 launched in July - brings with it a host of improvements, including enhanced performance and security for Edge browser and better overall performance, including a 30 per cent faster boot time.

Still molasses compared to Ubuntu, and still not getting the old 99%+ efficiency I used to get with W7 and W8 on the same machine.

Re: Windows 10 login

KLiK, I also use ReadyBoost. It reduces the number of read requests to the hard drive. I think.

"Windows 10 is bad for your privacy, and it is damaging Microsoft’s reputation as a trusted consumer brand."

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/11/26/micro...er_reinserted_windows_10/

The headline is: "Sneaky Microsoft renamed its data slurper before sticking it back in Windows 10 -- How many coincidences does it take to be Scroogled?" [Yea, it's not proper English, but this lot like their wordplay.]

I'm still on XP, even without support. And I'm still contemplating going to Ubuntu rather than taking Windows 10. They haven't got much longer to convince me to trust them as I need to buy a new machine pretty soon!

I used a software that did the same as Readyboost but in XP. It did speed up the aplications I chose. Like starting up GTA Vice City.

As for W10, it is only on a small notebook. Can't say I love it....

Ubuntu MATE ftw biggrin
