I'd be more concerned about the Orwellian Animal Farms that have been growing all over the place, large ones ;-)
A handy link for when you don't get the W10 upgrade offered: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6607-reser...s-10-windows-7-8-1-a.html Fired up the ol Multi-boot, which had not been in W8.1 since April. Appears somehow got W8.1 Pro... that phonecall I made to Milano gave me more than I bargained for ![]() |

And something for ''The missing Icon problem' http://www.askvg.com/fix-get-windows-10-upgrade-app-icon-is-missing-in-taskbar/
----------------------------------------Edit: After 3 enforced update boots, the W10 Upgrade icon appeared without applying the KB patch... it was pulled in automagically. "It’s Microsoft that ‘must have’ Windows 10 on as many computers as possible. This ‘free’ Windows is Microsoft’s base for selling apps, services and future Windows upgrades." Solitaire got removed, but bored by that long ago was using the Free Spider Solitaire anyhow to fill the free minutes ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 7, 2015 10:36:26 AM] |

Oh Dear Oh Dear, the emphasis is mine
----------------------------------------Windows 10 – opening day view 29 July 2015 Don’t believe most of the Windows 10 reviews out there. Many seem to come from writers who have swallowed whole the Microsoft hype. One ‘technology expert’ on the TV could only mention one downside to Windows 10 – the game ‘Hearts’ is missing. Oh please! There’s some nice stuff in Windows 10 like virtual desktops and the much better Windows apps (which now run in windows, not just full screen). Windows 10 isn’t ready for any discerning customers. Even by Microsoft’s own admission, there are more features and fixes that will be rolled out over the coming months. What’s been released on 29 July 2015 is the beta version of Windows that Microsoft could get by the ‘locked in’ date. The date decided the release, not the quality of the software. We have a mix of Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 computers. Unlike with some earlier versions of Windows, there’s nothing compelling in Windows 10. The incomplete Windows 10 that’s out now makes us prefer the Windows 8.1 machines for daily use. Almost like some of the WCG [past] project launches ;P Edit: hmmm, after full read, definitely on the 'much much later' for my workhorse machine [the one that does all the fancy graphing stuff]. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 7, 2015 9:51:45 AM] |

had not heard the term before but it seems we have Vista 10 on our hands
![]() http://techrights.org/2015/08/05/royalties-on-every-linux-device/ ONE MUST be deluded or seriously misinformed to actually believe that Microsoft is doing well, having just laid off many employees, admitted billions in losses, permanently ended many of its products, and then revealed a widely-loathed version of Windows which many people are simply unwilling to adopt. They won’t ‘upgrade’ to it, not even for ‘free’ (a false promise even for those who 'upgrade'). Our confidential sources inside Microsoft say that even Microsoft staff doesn’t like Vista 10. Rolling on anyway... the multi boot is waiting on that tick-mark to go fetch / apply the 'upgrade'. [in the meantime is chewing thru lots of FAAH to pump up the result rankings ![]() |

@nanoprobe, Well, they do collect tons of info on you... and force you to update and you can't even uninstall certain apps. Not good at all... Edge may be faster than other browsers but it also has no extensions, no sync, no nothing. W10, aside from a new start menu, DX12 and Edge, is no more than W7 or W8.1. My opinion. I kept it for 3 days on my desktop till I got tired of it. It keeps getting better. Windows 10 Starts Charging For Missing Features Now Windows 10 has launched, Microsoft is starting to fill in the blanks regarding features removed from Windows 7 and Windows 8 and it doesn’t make for pleasant reading. Why? Because behind this free upgrade are the first signs of where Microsoft will start charging users and it begins at the very bottom So much for everyone's' free update. Why am I not surprised. there r also a FREE players in Windows Store... also, there r some FREE games... ![]() |

For those upgrading multi-boot devices with Ubuntu and W8.1 [mine has W7+w8.1+various Ubuntu version], read this: http://superuser.com/questions/945290/would-a...tall-overwrite-linux-grub
Supposedly being reckless still gives a working multi-boot. So far after 3 boots in the upgrade cycle, grub is still coming up. The Progress dial is at 25% now and 85% through copying the files and promising "The PC will boot many times.... stand by". Not really, sat down to watch The Counselor :)))) |

Hilario, after 6 boots, some frolicking in W10-Pro, a brief visit to Edge, ascertaining BOINC still ran, W10 updates rolling in from MS, booted and Grub was still working, and listing the W10 option as....W8. From PIN sign-in to getting a populated start bar could have read a chapter of the latest Baldacci. Office 10 still loaded, still could access the file server and the interface, hmmm
----------------------------------------Verdict: What US Constitutional amendments would apply... the 5th for sure ;P Edit: Oh dear, hit Windows update and two more KB's 3074678 & 686, and not revealing -at all- what they're for or the size, but it's taking time. Can no longer remotely connect to BOINC on this machine, reverse though does work. The MB machine is getting into things it was not set to do in past... it's even trying to read the disk in the TV Media Set-top box... more Orwellian stuff...more hmmmm.
Anyone noticing your LAN goes to a crawl when a W10 device(s) come(s) on?
As per the discussion on backsharing, the first thing done was to opt out of sharing my bandwidth to others to get faster updates, yet when powering the multi-boot down [it still says W8 in Grub], my LAN returns to proper responsiveness. Most noticable it's when visiting the router status and statistics page... much slower to update. It shows since last boot, yesterday: Packets received:.... 130496093 Packets transmitted: 795897536 Pretty clear something is going up, yet when looking at the Ethernet Status for W10, received is 627MB, sent is 16.9MB, and receiving is going at the same pace as during the upgrade, 300KB+ per second.. Are they hiding something? [Paranoid, Black Sabbath is playing]. Once more, how to get out of P2P: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2955491/window...te-strangers-systems.html which I confirmed is off. Oh, frip, it's OneDrive fetching/sending another copy of what's already on the mirror drive. |
