Flashing taskbar icon

Why don't we have the flashing taskbar icon indicating a completed wu like ud does? Having to keep the task info screen open on the desktop so I know when a unit has finished has burned the edges of it into the screen of one of my 17" notebooks. Needless to say I'm not at all happy about this.

Don't laptops have energy saving features to turn off the screen?

I'm running UD Monitor (use WCG bat to start) and don't really care. After I get home from work, there's usually 2 or 3 units finished....ready for me to send in.

Er...I thought the flashing blue pill just meant that the server was backing out over there. There's a whole thread about giving nasty names to that phenomenon.

Re: Flashing taskbar icon

I use a dialup connection. The flashing icon means that a wu is finished and waiting to be sent in.
Using the energy saving feature still means that I would have to wake up the screen periodically to check work progress.
I really wanted to hear from someone from WCG about this for a definitive answer.

confused Re: Flashing taskbar icon

Hello John,
What does the screen saver show when the Agent is waiting to communicate? I do not use the screen saver and I have a DSL connection, so this is terra incognita to me.

Re: Flashing taskbar icon

Hello mycrofth,
Thank you for responding. I don't use the screen saver. What I was referring to was the Primary Task Information screen. When a unit finishes, the Proteome_Folding Project explanation disappears along with the progress bar. At the bottom, to the right of the WCG logo, it says "Agent paused, see www.wcgrid.org/cause.html" At this point, I close the window, dial up my ISP and connect, reopen the agent and send the wu in.
When I was crunching for ud, their taskbar icon would add a flashing yellow exclamation point when a WU completed, drawing attention to it and making it easier to keep tabs on work progress without having the Task Info screen open all the time. Having this screen open all the time doesn't really matter on a crt, but on an lcd it can cause damage over a relatively short time.
I realize your people have more important things to do, but it seems that this feature may already be in the United Devices software we are using and it could be a matter of simply turning it on. I can't be the only member on dialup and this little item is most useful to us.
Once again, I appreciate your getting back to me in a timely manner.

John.

Re: Flashing taskbar icon

Sounds as though it might be a good idea to have a different, non-flashing, icon show up to denote a problem. A red circle around the grid?

Re: Flashing taskbar icon

That would be fine. Anything to call attention to it.

Thanks,
John
