see reply elsewhere in the thread - it's quite unusual in that it's NOT intrinsically disordered.

Re: Welcome to the project!

Thank you for the detailed explanation and the link.

If this does indeed represent a common phenomena not just among viruses but also procaryotic and eucharyotic cell types, that would be, w/o exaggeration pretty revolutionary, wouldn't it? Especially since as far I can tell from what you've said, these transformations seem to happen w/o the benefit of dedicated chaperone molecules. This could be a discovery along the lines of CRISPR/CAS9.

So to sum up, in addition to working toward a cure for Ebola, this work could represent a significant advancement in molecular biology. Yes?

Re: Welcome to the project!

Yes, I think it's a transformative piece of science (pun intended). I think we can learn something significant about biology in general here - how a new layer of information is sometimes encoded in the genome. It's complex computationally though. I think wrapping our heads around this is only possible with the WCG, and a terrific computer scientist we have joining our group in February. He will be instrumental in figuring out how to frame the questions, predictions and calculations, and my existing team of biologists will be able to see how this applies to proteins of other viruses that we work with. Thanks so much for your interest!

Re: Welcome to the project!

Thank you again. I can't imagine the sort of difficulties that will be faced in approaching this problem and creating code to help solve it but I would like to make one suggestion that would vastly accelerate the process, assuming that your specialist thinks the approach is both possible and worth doing.

Finding a coding approach that would use the GPGPUs of high performance video cards in addition to CPUs could multiply the amount of work that could be done per unit of time several fold. If you look at the amount of work done for the last GPGPU project WCG worked on, the now completed Help Conquer Cancer project, you will see that we did hundreds of millions of work units in a very short period of time.

I don't know if whatever approach is decided upon will be amenable to the use of GPGPUs, but if it is, I hope it's something your team will consider. Not only will it stimulate interest among WCG volunteers who have been drooling over the possibility of another GPGPU oriented project, but it will allow us to cut through as much work as you can throw at us at a much faster rate.

edit: btw, thank you for letting us know about the Crowdrise funding effort. I know I'm a little late but I just made a contribution.

Re: Welcome to the project!

I doubt we see a gpu application here as long as the developers of vina don't provide a gpu version of it.

Re: Welcome to the project!

The developers of VINA don't have to. The software is open-source. But VINA isn't suitable for GPU's AFAIK. And that is the problem.

Re: Welcome to the project!

Dear twilyth: Thank you for your suggestion about the advantages (both practical and in terms of building enthusiasm/excitement) of GPGPUs. I will investigate the possibility of doing this as the project continues to ramp up. And thank you very much for your generous contribution.

Will Dr. Saphire be good for a sapphire? :D
Thank you Dr. Saphire for the plenty of information and good luck with OET :)

I'm happy to help and grateful that you will consider this approach. Thank you. love struck
