Linux Boinc Manager with Openbox

Ok, this has me a bit stumped. Running the Boinc client on Debian with MATE as a DE works fine. The Boinc client starts no problem, and the Manager app connects and administers it.

But then when I use Openbox as a DE, the BOINC client still starts up as normal, but the BINC Manager app won't connect. It also won't let me Add Project or Account Manager.

What am I missing?

Re: Linux Boinc Manager with Openbox

Sorry, this is not the linux aficionado support forum, so what's 'de' supposed to stand for, 'display eyecandy' ;?, no wait 'desktop environment' when googling "arch 'de' smile

One fail is a consequence of the other, if the boinc manager cannot connect to the core agent, it can't do project attaching or bam adding, where boinc manager is merely a gui that can instruct the agent to execute commands.

Have you specifically tried in boinc manager advanced menu option 'select computer' and entered for host 'localhost' or 127.0.0.1 and password field left blank where usually the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file on linux installs does not contain a random password.

The other workaround could be to employ the boinccmd tool in terminal.

Re: Linux Boinc Manager with Openbox

Welcome to the forum amarti,

Open a terminal and type:
which boincmgr
change directory to where the boincmgr executable is (usually /usr/bin) type:
cd /usr/bin
try starting the executable type:
boincmgr

This works for me using Mint & Openbox, using the Openbox menu system/right clicky doesnt work, I would suspect a permissions problem or the menu path is incorrect.

Good luck and have a lot of fun!!!

Re: Linux Boinc Manager with Openbox

Huh, problem solved. Thanks guys! :-) :-) I tried the second suggestion first and that did it. Weird though, I can see where the Openbox menu might have a permission problem (which is why I have to type my password to shutdown or reboot) but I believe (could be mis-remembering) I had the same problem when I just opened a Terminal and launched it. Somehow switching to /usr/bin/ made it connect to the local host.

There's a technical term for solutions like this: effin magic.

I hate effin magic. ;-)

Anyways, I'm curious about lavaflow's solution and will have to try it sometime after a reboot. Thanks again for the solution and knowledge guys.

Re: Linux Boinc Manager with Openbox

Ok, update. Using localhost didn't work, but 127.0.0.1 did work.

Weird, but interesting. And successful, so :-).

Confirmed that starting boincmgr in a Terminal doesn't work (by that I mean it starts but doesn't automatically connect to the running boinc) unless I first switch to /usr/bin/ where the binary is located.

Meanwhile, using the /usr/bin/ path in the command for the menu didn't work. Figured I'd get all this into the forum if someone else has this problem.

BTW, thank you for 'which'. 10 years of using Linux and I don't think I ever knew about that command. Handy thing to have.

So now I'm able to administer crunching in my (current) favorite DE.
