Re: Welcome to the Uncovering Genome Mysteries project

Good to see a new project. Unfortunate to see people who think asprin occurs naturally. It doesn't. It is NOT found anywhere in nature. It's a completely synthetic molecule created by Bayer.

This is quite bold statement DA rolling eyes

Wikipedia thinks something a bit different about it

...The active ingredient of Aspirin was first discovered from the bark of the willow tree in 1763 by Edward Stone of Wadham College, University of Oxford. He had discovered salicylic acid, the active metabolite of aspirin...

Cheers peace

Well, technically, Aspirin as in acetylsalicylic acid, doesn't appear to occur naturally. What occur naturally is salicylic acid, which is estered to turn it's hydroxyl group into an ester group, giving birth to Aspirin.

Now, we couldn't have aspirin if it weren't for nature in the first place... so I guess both are right; it depends on how deeply technical you want to get hahaha laughing

Re: Welcome to the Uncovering Genome Mysteries project

Thanks Chilean wink

ETA: Since Aspirin is just a brand, it can be hardly found in nature raised eyebrow

Re: Welcome to the Uncovering Genome Mysteries project

I am glad to start contributing to a new project :) Does anyone know if this will be available on android app or only on PC?

See system requirement page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq

Thanks for the link lavaflow. Are there plans to eventually make this project do work on an android platform?

Best of luck reaching or, better, exceeding expectations for this project.

Re: Welcome to the Uncovering Genome Mysteries project

Hello Torsten and Wim. I would like to know what we are looking at under project graphics. It appears the graphics shows a sampling of the genetic sequences being compared. But I would like to know why sometimes only one sequence shows up. In fact, one time only one sequence showed up and it was just an "I". Not much of a sequence. Or is this just an artifact of the graphics information extraction process?

The screen saver displays the aligment of the two seqeunces from the last comparison at the time the data is pulled. Some sequences can be quite long so the display is done from a random point in the sequences. It's possible if a short sequence is being compared to a long sequence, the shorter seqeunce wouldn't have any data to display at the chosen point.

Re: Welcome to the Uncovering Genome Mysteries project

Hi Crystal.

Yes, we look at novel, yet-uncovered genomes. These are mostly from microorganisms from the environment.

Best wishes,

Torsten

Re: Welcome to the Uncovering Genome Mysteries project

Dear yo2013.

There is some formatting and further processing to be done, after all WU have been compared. When this is done, then the data be in a usable format for public access.

Best wishes,

Torsten
