I have been trying to install the BOINC software (version 7.2.47) on a new machine running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit), and I got an error "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running."
This is a very strange error that I've never seen before. What could be going wrong here? |

Corrupted download of installer? Delete and fetch a new copy.

If it's not the problem and hard to imagine, but your windows is 64 bit, it still should allow 32 bit program installations. That's what the wcg installer is! Just in case, here is a link to the 64 bit berkeley 'recommended' version, 7.2.42

Hi dkapetansky,
----------------------------------------Is the problem also occuring when you try to install some other software, or just in case of BOINC agent? Cheers ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Thanks Lavaflow! This worked fine for me. But perhaps I could throw out a general suggestion, based upon my experience with this.
Could the WCG home page be upgraded so that when people like me click on the "Download" button at the top right of the page, and then select "Windows," they receive the correct version of the software for their machine? Clearly, this isn't working properly now, and I'm sure I'm not the first nor the last to face this. This is especially important because that page is the public face of WCG for many people, and we want it to show and work well. |

Just shakes head at this. A brief search on the internet it seems to be a more common problem with 'older' programs and windows 7. It's faicf a first report on these forums.
A possible workaround with the wcg kit would maybe have been to right click on it in explorer and select properties. When opened, click the compatibility tab. Tick the 'run this program in compatibility mode' and pick e.g. the xp service pack3 from the list. If you still got the wcg installer you could try to start it this way and if it does, just cancel out of it. Now you got the 64 bit version which in terms of processing the sciences makes no difference in performance. The science apps do this. |

Hi dkapetansky,
----------------------------------------Sorry this might be a stupid question but did you make sure that there were not any traces of BOINC or WCG in the program files? It could be an old registry file that might be causing an issue as well. If you download a program CCleaner it does have a good registry cleaner option and its free to use (I have used for years without issues). You can get it at filehippo.com or at their site. ![]() |

Hello, vlado101,
Thank you for your good advice! Since this was a brand new, from-the-ground-up machine build, it is unlikely that there were any WCG residuals hanging around anywhere. Ultimately, it was discovered that the WCG web site downloads an incorrect 32-bit version of the software to 64-bit Windows machines, triggering an immediate failure. Fortunately, Lavaflow directed me to the correct 64-bit version, and now it is working fine. |
