You have not learned have you! Going with most of the posters in this thread we are NOT interested in any form of fiscal gain from our work. We are here for the good of mankind in general, not for what we can benefit financially out of it, stop flogging a dead horse.

I think it is a brilliant idea from KliK - for those inventions, built upon the research of WCG, that generate a profit, share a small piece of that profit with the people and institutions that made that profit possible. After all, what we are is investors.
This would take nothing away from the causes that are being supported. And it would recognize (compensate) in some small way, all of the people who have volunteered their systems to these causes. As it is, SOMEONE is going to profit financially from these inventions, and it would be only right that they recognize and compensate for the billions of dollars of free research and compute time that is being received. That doesn't change the equation regarding altruism. We are still volunteering our time and our electricity. If I get a few bucks back, it's not likely to cover the costs incurred for electricity. Frankly, if the incentive provided a means to donate back to one of the causes, I suspect many people would simply do that. Plus, if anyone believes that money somehow isn't involved, then please don't be so naive. At some point, someone creates a product, which is sold at a price. The REAL benefit of this approach is that it can be used to greatly INCREASE the number of people and systems supporting WCG. It takes away the fear that running on WCG will cost money by increasing electrical costs. That is a stumbling block in promoting this to the individual/residential marketplace. If set up correctly, this could be administered automagically and at minimal cost (which would come out of the royalty). |

I disagree. This is not about fiscal gain. This is a valid subject to discuss.
By providing an incentive that might partially offset costs of the donator, we have the opportunity to massively increase the number of contributors. This will increase the benefits of WCG to the "good of mankind". This is a positive idea from KliK. After all, what's the whole concept behind the badges we get? It's to recognize contribution. KliK simply extends that idea to a level that is meaningful. |

Also, think of it this way.
Many of us get cash back or points for using our credit cards for purchases. We don't buy the things because we get cash back. In the same way, we don't donate our computer time because we might get a few dollars back. We buy the thing or donate the computer time because is satisfies a need or desire. Second example: If you do volunteer work for an organization, in the US, you can deduct the cost of mileage for that charitable work on your tax return. I don't do the charitable work because I can deduct the cost of mileage. I do the volunteer work because it's something I want to do. I don't not do the charitable work because I'm going to get partial reimbursement (through tax savings). That would be counterproductive (and stupid, if I can say that.) That's essentially the argument people are making here when they say "I'm outta here" if this isn't a totally altruistic endeavor. |

Is not going to happen. The international legal cost to get this off the ground probably will outstrip the marginal 'profit share', a bridge too far. We facilitate cheapest possible base data generation which moves research forward which otherwise would never happen; with spare cycles as core principle. If then any volunteer chooses to do more than spare cycles is entirely up to the individual. For that you only get 'standing' with balloon titles and badges. Veteran cruncher, just to name one.

thx mmccart1,
----------------------------------------sthg will come out of this...yes I do charity work in Croatia also, but only money that I invest gets paid back from taxes... also I do donate blood for the transfusion, which I do like...over 20 donations so far have been made from me...and some people only see it as a 1free day that I get for the rest (compensation)... it's not world that is mean and negative...it's just the people... but we can change the world...a brick at a time! ;) |
