Just (FINALLY!) ordered the Dual 5650 from WSI =D 2 days to get it set up and then its go time =D figured I'd take the jump and just go for it, found a guide on setting up BOINC on Ubuntu, hopefully it'll be simple enough, otherwise I may bug you guys for some pointers ;)

You have to connect to your (new) Virtual Machine (Cloud gave you the information such as IP, login, port - usually 22 -...) via SSH (on Mac OS X using Terminal, in Win you have to download PuTTy allowing you to connect via SSH).

When you are connected to VM, type:
sudo apt-get install boinc-client and press Enter

Type "y" or "yes" for every request during installation

When installation finishes, type:
boinccmd --project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ YOUR WEAK KEY and press Enter

You can find your weak key here

That it is.

Cheers and good luck

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

I used (as Safak recommended) 3 Ubuntu 14.04 instances - 4 (2 cores) + 8 (4 cores) + 8 (4 cores) - and achieved following preliminary results (still have some WU's in PVal - will post an update):

- 9.5 days crunching x 20 CPU threads,
- no Invalids nor Errors,
- all 3 instances with similar output,
- 176 CPU days ATM (4,222 CPU hours), 345,785 WCG points, 628 results,
- 81.9 WCG points (i.e. 11,7 BOINC credits) per CPU hour.
- 3.55 EuroCents per CPU hour.

I am also running free trials in DigitalOcean, Joyent Cloud, ProfitBricks and Brightbox - will post updates about their performances somewhen later (by now DigitalOcean scores the best confused ) wink

They are free, so they are worth trying wink

Cheers and good luck

ETA: I crunched MCM only

branjo looking forward to your updates..

Btw, I faced cpu utilisation problem @ both azure and amazon. One of my 4core VM was running 66 percent. Other 8 cores were fine at 99.8 percent. I just deleted the low performer to free up funds running the others..
@Amazon, cpu utilisation is 10 to 20 percent. One MCM VU takes 13 hours to finish. How can I motivate the beast to crunch at full load?

Preliminary information about Free Trial on MS Windows Azure:

- The free trial is for 1 month OR 150 EUR (i.e. 200 USD. i.e. 120 GBP) whatever comes first.
- After trial period ends, MS just stop your instances, so you don't need to worry you will pay something.
- Credit/Debit Card info required.
- Maximum of 20 CPU threads allowed per free trial.

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

This might help you confused

http://wiki.joyent.com/wiki/display/jpc2/Conn...Your+Machine+from+Windows

Cheers good luck

ETA: of course, login might be different and if you have not created SSH key it has to ask for your password during installation.
Anyway, reboot of Windows PC from which you are connecting also might help wink

ETA2: it is a good learning process for us, non-linux users raised eyebrow

Figured out the issue >_> I was changing the port to 29 as the IP was ***/29 but it should've stayed as default of 22 >_> all up and running now with afew minor adjustments to Thargor's guide =D (Running in Ubuntu so had to install Nano and then use slightly adjusted commands to edit the files, so if anybody needs any help just let me know)

EMAIL5AUG - $5 credit if the above doesn't work anymore.

Also, when one registers through a refferal link, he gets $10 and I don't think a code can be used again.

Only just seen this post, Labinopper, sorry - the /29 on the end of your IP is used to show how many IPs you have available in your allocation (a /29 notation means a block of 8 IPs). More info can be seen in the table here, if you're interested.

I'd not specified the editor in my instructions, as there are so many text-editors available for Linux - some people prefer the simplicity of "nano" and its variants (myself included), other people prefer the power and flexibility of "vi" and its variants, and all other options.

Good to know you got it up and running, though! smile

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

Every time I run the numbers I seem to come to the same conclusion:

Based on the costs of getting a 32 thread setup it seems that for the first six months or so it is cheaper to rent. ($60 for a dual E5-2670 was a hard find and always out of stock https://www.wholesaleinternet.net/dedicated/)

For a period of between 6 and 30/36 Months of running, building crunchers based on L5630 was the cheapest way (outlay was approx GBP 120 plus running costs for the period)

Building a dual E5-2660 at a cost of ~GBP485 is cheapest to build and then run from 30-36months up to 60months

and thereafter a rig built using a xeon v3 or v4 engineering sample wins.

Of course this observation only considers runtime and considers onlly my personal costs for electricity. Without hard numbers to go by I would say that each generation of cpu points production might be as follows:

L5630 (two pairs): 13000ppd boinc
e5-2660 (one pair) 16000ppd boinc
Xeon E5-2699 v3 (single cpu): 19200ppd boinc

These are guesstimations, You may know better
