Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

Hi Safak,
I would be very interested to know how your FREE ( biggrin ) windows azure experiment works out. How many points per hour? How long to crunch a work unit?

I tried the Amazon EC2 1 year free trial (micro instance) for crunching, but it was no good at all. It took days and days to finish a work unit.

Hope you have better success with Azure, do let us know! smile

sunfolk,

I used the free 30 day azure account back in January 2014 with the following results:
runtime=0:048:15:39:33 points=132,917 results=133
At the time the best I could get for free was a dual core, but don't recall what CPU.

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

Hello Δv,
Re: your Azure experiment.

A quick and nasty calculation makes that approx 114 points per hour, which is very similar to my experience with Faah on a cheap KVM vps.

Thanks for sharing deltavee cool

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

@ branjo ; "try it free" plan :) you need;
- a microsoft account, ( of which you can register your gmail or any other adress)
-a mobile number that you can get verification SMS.
-Credit card ( use a virtual one if you are uneasy)

then follow along the process in the following link;

https://ripple.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5124

I set up 4 + 8+8 core 3 Virtual machines.
installed UBUNTU 14:04
downloaded Putty as described.
Ssh to the machines and set them on fire :)
Now 20 cores are running 24/7.
the performance is somewhat lower than my expectation but Heck , it's free computing :)

@sunfolk;
I am not into PPD things, I care about the finished workunits numbers,since it's what really counts for the contribution to science isn't it.
But here are some numbers for comparison;
My humble core 2 DUO desktop with two physical cores crank out an MCM in 5.5 Hours per core.
AZURE;
4 core VM cranks out MCM 13,7 hours per core.
8 core VMs manages 9,2 Hours per core.

VM CPUs are Xeons and opterons which IMHO, should perform better..
I googles around for FREE VPS. there are many chioces, I will check and inform in this thread, any viable options.

I am not an IT guy, it took my three days to figure out the problems I faced. so in case you head for the Azure thing, don't hesitate to ask me any road blocks you have, I will assist As far as I can...

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

Mamajuanauk - A couple questions about your experience with WSI. Once they have provisioned your instance, do they send you an IP address you can SSH to? I saw they had some admin control panel options you could add (for a fee). I figured those weren't necessary to get crunching, but wanted to be sure. Also, when you said you were letting an instance expire, did you run into any trouble with them trying to auto-renew and bill you again?

Thanks!
Yes, once the instance build is under way, you can see the IP etc in the account pages. I just use putty to connect, install and manage boinc initially then manage via WCG profile.

The IPMI option is not required to crunch, just good to monitor the hw periodically. Don't need the control panel.

Not renewed yet, still within the first month for testing...

However, when I get my latest machine online I'll likely drop the cloud instances.

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

I've also had my WSI server (dual-X5650) crunching for just under 2 weeks, so far - apart from a 15-minute network-blip, last weekend, it seems to have been rock-solid up to now:
Machine Name: leviathan
Last Result: 08/06/2014 12:00:18
Run-time: 0:292:12:59:41
Points Scored: 858,893
Results Returned:: 1,565

It's just starting to settle down after I started it out with a work-cache of 5 days, and it grabbed lots of MCM1, FA@H, and CEP2 units to churn through. By overall stats above, I work that out to be just over 122 points/hour, but I'm sure that'll change a bit as it starts to settle down into just running MCM1 for a few weeks. Current daily-stats are:
   Date Total Run Time Points Results
08/06/2014 0:014:07:43:41 39,697 39
08/05/2014 0:021:11:28:39 61,620 62

08/03/2014 0:024:16:51:14 73,228 96
08/02/2014 0:025:22:04:30 74,836 116

07/30/2014 0:023:10:03:28 72,466 183

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

Same provider as Mamajuanauk, but I managed to grab one of the dual-5650 (6-core, 12-thread, 2.66-3.06GHz per core) servers when they were briefly back in stock.

Thargor or Mamajuanauk (or anybody else who knows) How easy are these to set up? I've had a look at the cost and whatnot and I'm currently running my 4c/8th machine 24/7 at home, but the dual-5650 costs £40ish for 12c/24th so 3x as many threads, I guess I'm paying more in electric for 8 threads than I would be for 8 threads from WSI? (I know its 24 threads, just working out an electric cost per thread comparison kinda thing?)

Also do they return results pretty sharpish? I don't really know how to compare time spent per unit to my current PC, but I assume it'd be fairly similar?

Definitely plan on investigating into this, as I can easily spend £40(or more, alot more!) taking a woman out for a date, I think its only fair to say I can invest £40 into a potential 2 years RT

EDIT: Also if I was to run CEP2 (as I really want that damned badge!) I assume I'd need more RAM? I vaguely recall seeing somewhere a suggested 1GB RAM per unit?

Thanks guys =D

Well, the operating system comes pre-installed by WSI, you choose which you'd like - I went with 64-bit debian-Linux as it's what I'm used to using & looking after with work. After that, and my usual tinkering (security config, etc), it was a few commands to get BOINC installed, adjust a few config files, and away it goes...

Also do they return results pretty sharpish? I don't really know how to compare time spent per unit to my current PC, but I assume it'd be fairly similar?

Back when I used to run BOINC on an old i7-920 (4c/8t 2.66GHz), judging by the stats, imagine 3 of them running side-by-side, somewhere where you don't have to care about electricity costs or cooling-ability. I used to get 15-25k points per day, so it's not too bad a comparison judging by my stats with the new server so far.

Definitely plan on investigating into this, as I can easily spend £40(or more, alot more!) taking a woman out for a date, I think its only fair to say I can invest £40 into a potential 2 years RT

Start off with paying for just a month, to get it set up and settled, and to give yourself an idea how much work it'll do. After that, if you feel like keeping it, you can pay for 6 or 12 months' in one go and save yourself some money in the process (you only pay for 5 or 10 months, respectively).

EDIT: Also if I was to run CEP2 (as I really want that damned badge!) I assume I'd need more RAM? I vaguely recall seeing somewhere a suggested 1GB RAM per unit?

You can pay for a RAM upgrade, but it will cost you extra per month (from $5/month extra for 16GB total up to an extra $40/month for 72GB total for the server I went for). Same if you need bigger/more disks for storage. I've not run it on CEP2 (apart from when it downloaded a single work-unit at the start), as I'm concentrating on MCM1 and will be for the foreseeable future, so I couldn't answer whether the 8GB will be enough to run it consistently/efficiently. However, 24 threads of MCM1 is only using around half of it, so plenty to spare yet...

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

If I do invest in one and can't figure out how to get it all set up, would you be prepared to give me a helping hand? =D Also, can't invest in one right now anyway as the 5650 has sold out(since last night!) and that seems to be the best one for your money by far, I did use Mamaj's stats from the 5639 and 5650 to compare results returned over their respective running days, and the 5639 had only 101, whilst the 5650 was 160, so assuming they both run the same project, thats a relatively big difference for the $10 saving

Saying that, I may invest in one anyways, just because I'm mega impatient =D

Try to be patient and get the 5650, it's far better for the money...

And yes, I'll assist as far as I can with the setup.

I used this to assist
