ErstwhileIII, rest assured we're not going anywhere and as others have mentioned, this number of active projects is more of the norm for World Community Grid, and that we are in the alpha testing phase of our next project. No anticipated date yet for beta testing or launch, but know that we're working hard on getting that project ready for our wonderful volunteers.
Many thanks! |

Hi jhindo, I know (and also understand the reasons why) you keep everything secret until nearer (if not, at) the launch date, although are there any snippets of information you can share as to what the next project will be? - even if it's just the general type of area it'll be in and as to whether there'll be a (slim) possibility it'll be GPU enabled?

I can confirm it will not be a GPU project, though we continuously discuss the possibility of GPU with our current research teams, as well as any projects in the pipeline.

CEP2 is a bit slow at the moment at giving out WUs.

There is or was a document floating around which said wcg would support from 7 to 10 projects. Since not able to retrace, can't say if this was a commitment to have an infrastructure in place or whether it was a goal to have that many running.
----------------------------------------Fresh off the press, simap is moving off boinc by the end of the year. They think they can do a better job by just running on in-house resources. For one, no homogeneity issues, total control of the hardware/environment their project runs on. They're vague in that they said not to make a boinc client public, which left it to guess whether they'd at all would be using the boinc server/client system. Sad, as this is pretty much the only reliable bio related project running on android. The wcg fahv dog on android continues. Running just 1 of 4 cores and still crashing out with signal 11 on a frequent basis. Never such a mishap with simap, even on 4 threads at same time. Simap coming off means the power available to scientists, referring to the pizza box computer discussion, seems big enough so that distributed computing on a public grid with all it's issues is becoming slowly redundant. Wcg picky and choosy setting a minimum duration before boarding to justify the investment of launching a stable project, a 7 to 10 goal is most very unlikely to happen again, so guess the document was actually removed. [OT]IIRC, Simap starter its android app in coop with local Samsung (might or might not be an important information, it is up to anyone how (s)he will read it), so we don't (and will probably never) know the reason why they suddenly pulled off the grid. I don't buy the ***** they posted. But, since I have never been a huge contributor to Simap, who cares about my opinion Cheers [/OT]ETA: tagging edited to appropriate forum language - ErikaT ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Excactly, "who cares about my opinion", I don't, but since you felt to inject your, how to phrase, poorly informed state 'Any' android client can attach to simap, as I did and many wcg android volunteers do. What they did with samsung, is what wcg did/does with sony vaio, seek a quasi lock-in, until the volunteer finds it's easy to compute for other projects too on the same device.
----------------------------------------Simap are well respected reference resource in the science community, continuing their new engine based database and continuing to make that resource publicly available. The old one build on present will discontinue by eoy, as in it remains accessible but will not be maintained with new gene similarity mappings.
