Thermal paste or pad for CPU?

Simple question - or is it?

Which is best?

Thermal paste can be applied thinner but is difficult to get even

Thermal pads are usually 1mm and even

Which is best?

I ask as I'm seeing some CPU cores within the same CPU showing significant differences in temperature...

Thanks in advance

Re: Thermal paste or pad for CPU?

Thermal paste is hard to beat if you apply it right. Here's a video that shows which way is best: applying cpu paste

As for the difference in cpu core temps, this can happen on older cpu's that have internal cooler paste underneath the heatshield that has gotten old. Or newer cpu's where the internal paste wasn't applied correctly in the factory. On some cpu's the heatshield can be removed - a diy razorblade job - so that the original paste can be replaced. If the temp difference between cores is 10 degrees or less I wouldn't worry too much about though. But if you must, here's how: Haswell and Ivy Bridgy heatshield removal

Edit: changed the video

Re: Thermal paste or pad for CPU?

Thank sneezed, I use the spread method and always do self build so all paste is new at the time of build...

The temp difference I'd lass that 10 degrees, as you say, I will not worry about it...

Many thanks
